Damn man I didn't know it was that long. He was here longer than John Ferguson and Joe Dean...

Mad respect for a career that long. So we can safely assume that LSU will be hiring Bama's Women's basketball or Soccer play by play voice?

All the old voices leaving really sucks. New folks are either (a) irrational homers or (b) total pros without any culture to them.

The old ones were the best because you knew they cared about the school, they knew everybody and everything, they had that old southern radio voice and they would tell it like it was. Hawthorne and Munson were the best at that. Then guys like Jon Ward and Jack Cristil were total pros.

Hawthorne has called 22 bowl games for the Tigers and he was behind the microphone for the “Earthquake Game” against Auburn in 1988, the 28-21 win over No. 1 Florida in Tiger Stadium in 1997, and the “Game of the Century” in 2011 when top-ranked LSU kicked a field goal in overtime to beat No. 2 Alabama, 9-6, in Tuscaloosa.

Guy has called some of the best. Good luck to him.

I always enjoy finding LSU night games on Sirius now, and WWL back in the day, on the way home from Alabama day games.

Such a dumb post. Just because someone is a total pro doesn't mean they don't have any culture to them. I'd rather have a pro that than a guy like Rod Bramlett complain every 5 seconds on a play by play on how the Barners are getting hosed by the officials.

And the LSU 2 out homer in the bottom of the 9th in the CWS is still my favorite call by Jim.

Damn that sucks. I still miss John Ward (retired radio voice of the Vols) and now Bobby Denton is gone too (he passed away last year while still our stadium announcer and Bobby had been there for decades).

Hopefully, y'all find someone who can share their love for the Tigers with everyone the same way Jim Hawthorne did.

By total pro I meant they sound like they just got created from the Generic ESPN Announcer Machine. Use all the catch phrases, etc etc. Prime example - Chip Carey.

Well yea, I would too, but Bramlett fits into group A. I'd rather have Eli than Bramlett, and while Eli has been around a while he sounds more like the random game of the week guy than the "voice" of Alabama. That is fine, but I prefer the Munson/Hawthorne type. I despise the Bramlett type.

Munson and Hawthorne and those types dogged the shite out of LSU and UGA when they were bad, and they let you know it. But they also got irrationally excited at times. They weren't what I would call whiney homers, but they were clearly UGA and LSU guys. Similar to Skip with the Braves.

"And here's Morris with 2 outs. Now it'll take a base hit, an error, a wild pitch or something..
Swung on and hit to right field that's way back there....WAY BACK THERE...
HOME RUUUUUUUUUN !! Warren Morris hits a 2-run home run! And the Tigers are the National Champs. I don't believe it!"
"Holyyy Coowwwwww !!1"

As an example, I'd put Bob Kesling (UT guy) in the same boat as Eli. Both are professional announcing types, but you'd never hear either show any type of "excitement" like Munson did, or whine on air about calls in any manor. That's better than the Bramlett/UGA guys stuff, but still not as enjoyable as the old types.

Just my opinion I guess.

Kessling tries but he's not very good at football. In fact, he's pretty bad at it imo though he has his moments. But Kessling butchers names like nobody's business and 'cheggerboards' instead of 'checkerboards' is annoying as hell.

Now our current Lady Vol's Basketball announcer is AWESOME. I don't know who he is but I chanced on to listening to him once last year and really enjoyed it -- he made it exciting and I don't really listen to basketball whether it's our men or our women. I wish Kessling brought half the excitement that guy did (sorry don't know his name).

Regardless, I miss John Ward but if the LV basketball radio guy could do the same for football someone needs to sign him up.
