Question for Dallas posters

My girlfriend and I are moving to Dallas in August to start our jobs. We are looking for places to live. I will be working in downtown Dallas and my girlfriend will be working in Plano. We're trying to live closer to the city as new professionals.
We have heard the Uptown area is pretty popular with young professionals. Anyone got any insight on that area and what apartment complex are worth checking out? Any other areas that are comparable that we should take a look at?
TIA

If you want to spend more than you should, then go to Uptown. I personally do not think the scene is worth the price.
The problem is Dallas as a city is not the best place to live. Taxes are higher, schools are worst, services sub-par, crime is higher, etc.. If you could figure out how to live in Collin or Denton counties you would be better off. That would make your commute worse, by the GFs would be no issue.
I started out living in Dallas out of college and have been moving North since up the tollway

depending on your commute, i'd much rather live in Lewisville, Grapevine, Plano, or Frisco than Dallas proper.
But I'm married with kids so my opinion may be moot.

That's kind of the issue. I don't want to have to commute into town every day. I'm going to be working a ton as it being a new associate in public accounting so adding commute time sounds miserable.

Actually, try the Highland Park area. I hear it's very affordable, and close to downtown

Alright we'll check that out. My girlfriend has been looking in Plano and it seems like a good spot. I might just have to live with the commute

What are your cons for Uptown? Is it just value?

That's sort of what I did. I started up downtown, then M-streets, then Plano. Before I left DFW, I had ended up in Wylie. I guess all along I was moving back towards Fayetteville.

My personal take is that if you are in a relationship, it diminishes the value of living in Uptown. If you were single, it might be worth the prices to take advantage of the McKinney Ave scene. Also, if you were gay. If you want some of the "urban feels" of condo living, you're just as well off living in Legacy. That whole area is about to triple in "urban environment", too.

Well damn. I'm not the biggest city person so it's not really the urban aspect of it all. It just seemed to have good restaurants and bars in the area and I wouldn't have to drive all over the place.
Did you have to commute to wherever you worked? I grew up in suburban atlanta so I have seen some shite traffic. Is it pretty bad around Dallas?

i was joking. Highland Park is the most expensive real estate in the state.

As stated here a couple times Uptown is probably where you want to live. If you were single I would say 100% live in Uptown. But you have a GF so you don't need the crazy party lifestyle that Uptown brings. Since you want to stay close to downtown, maybe check out Lower Greenville or the Arts district. I had a friend live at this place called The Arts that was really nice and pretty well priced.
I am moving to Dallas soon myself so I am checking out Uptown, West Village, Lower Greenville & Knox Henderson.

Wylie, Mesquite, or Rockwall may be more suitable for you then. Little less urban but still a straight shot to downtown Dallas. i haven't done a TON of driving to and from during peak hours, but it usually doesn't seem too bad.

At least you didn't fool me into looking in the hood

I have heard that about Lower Greenville. My host on my office visit lives around there and said the same things. I'm sure that we'll look in that area as well.
You moving to Dallas for a job?

Yes sir. What's your email? I'll shoot you the list of about 5 properties I am checking out next month.
I have a friend who lives in Lower Greenville at one of the Power Properties and it's really cool. Old school charm with new modern touches.

If it's a typical job in public accounting, this isn't really relevant. Most of your long hours will be spent in the client's office, not your own. Your commute will change every time they assign you to a client.
As a new associate, you're going to be scheduled to work with several different senior associates and managers, each one on different engagements.

Appreciate it.

Yeah it's going to be a typical job in public accounting
You make a good point though. I'll likely be all over North Texas.

I don't live in Dallas but if you're new to the city, younger, and don't have kids I would definitely live in Dallas. Check out the areas already mentioned. The Dallas burbs, like most burbs, are pretty blah and the city itself is a lot of fun.
