Perhaps most significant, Smith’s coach also revealed that the linebacker won’t be signing a letter of intent after finalizing his college plans. Smith will commit, and then officially be a signee on his first day of summer classes.

“He’s not going to sign a letter of intent,” Harold said. “The reason why is because what he went through last week. This just gives us flexibility in case something else unexpectedly happens again.”

quote:

“Of course, they all said that’s fine. But they were like ‘What does this mean?’ They said this has never been done before, to the best of their knowledge. It could set a precedent. They had to do some research, but they said it indeed could be done and that they’re fine with it.

“I guess you’ll really be able to tell if a coach or college really wants a kid if they’ll agree to do this – letting a kid come to their campus this summer without signing an LOI.”

“Again, we’re doing it this way after what happened last week. I don’t know where this is all going to go. I guess God put Roquan in this position for a reason. Maybe it was meant to help educate other kids about these types of situations.”

Oh man, I hope this doesn't become the new norm. Recruiting would go on for 4 months more than it already does?

Although it will probably always remain a path taken by very few players, since the only way to guarantee their spots at the school they want is to sign.

I could have also done without the part where his coach sees him as a light to guide others in their recruiting journey.

If that does happen, I can imagine that the rules will be changed once again.

Nah, LOI is a totally one-sided agreement. It's not even a legal contract. The only thing schools can do about it is stop recruiting the player.

LOI only exists for the convenience of the coaches and schools being able to lock a kid in.

It's one reason I mentioned in another thread that the early signing period should be the traditional signing day and that the second signing period should be the normal spring signing period in late April or May.

Reading the article Coach Harold is all about "we" & "us" & talking about coaches leaving etc....

Hell he's leaving Macon Co. & taking over the program at Brunswick...

I'm not sure how many spots A&M has left, but UCLA and Michigan definitely have spots for him. I think A&M is trying to sign another scholarship QB (they only have 2) so hopefully that outs them at 85. It's ok for him, since these schools all have spots left, but if more kids decide not to sign an LOI, coaches will not hold spots for all of them and some talented players could end up SOL.

This is by far the most drawn out crap shoot I have ever seen...I mean who does this kid really think he is? I'm leaning more to not wanting him now...there is a ton more to this story than what's being reported.

Why do we get go after the one recruit in the nation that wants to draw things out into November? Maybe he will sign before next signing day.

Can't blame him for wanting to leave Macon Co.
Although he hasn't really done anything there.
He's 19-15
By comparison, they had a coach in the 90's that went 97-10

To be fair to the kid, I'm sure he has a lot of doubts about the process after UCLA's DC left one day after recruitment was over and he was in all likelihood lied to about it.

This is stupid. We absolutely want him. He is doing everything right in this situation. I do not blame him one bit. There is a reason that you can do what he is doing. Also, the signing period for the LOIs goes until April for a reason.

Hopefully some good will come about all this and change the way recruiting/scholarships are done

Sounds fine to me. Hopefully it becomes a trend. Since players won't be locked into particular school then the school should have zero qualms about cutting them loose if they don't live up to their scholarship requirements. Appears to be another step toward professional sports in college; players exerting their freedom/rights. But be careful what you wish for. Freedom is a two-edged blade.

Yeah, I have no problem with a kid using his leverage to make the best decision he can.

Playing the devil's advocate....

It's another distraction that this staff doesn't need. We've got coaches now who've gotta keep spending time & money kissing this kids arse till the end of July with no guarantee we even get him...

Our coaches time & efforts are better spent focusing 100% on Spring ball, player development, camps, game planning, installation of Shotty's offensive tweaks & recruiting for the '16 cycle as opposed to kissing RS's arse all summer. Every minute spent kissing RS's arse is a minute that we could be using elsewhere in preparation for the '15 season....

Just a unneeded & unnecessary distraction we don't need at this time of the year...

What do you think about this kid? Is he a genius for taking this route or is he a non-conformist who might be a problem for coaches to handle? Coaches can't be herding cats.

the more this situation continues, the more I like it...schools have forever been able to lie, cheat, etc to recruit a kid and literally make a slave out of a college athlete if they choose. This kid may be setting the table for some necessary reforms. Good for him!

I think he's just protecting himself after UCLA tried to pull a fast one on him. He's leaving himself an out so schools don't try it again
