For one of the greatest coaches of all time. Did a lot for the sport and college athletics.

Me, no? I just think he is one of the people responsible for turning college athletics into semipro sports teams that are named after a college with loose associations with the school.

Have you seen the taxes they take on it?

And all the charities that suddenly start calling and trying to guilt you?

And all the "relatives" who come out of the woodwork with a hand out?

And all of the friends who suddenly have business opportunities for you to invest in?

Truly amazing, widely acclaimed and respected across the nation except for this board.

Unbelievable.

Fixed it for you. Dean Smith is hated (by some) because he was so dominant. Period.

Wish to heck he'd been at Georgia and did for Georgia hoops what he did for North Carolina hoops. Can't imagine any realistic fan thinking otherwise.

Well, he/UNC claimed a 96% graduation rate. At a school with perceived higher academic standards. He had a number of guys on his team that were clearly not UNC or even Rocky Mount CC material. Yet, they graduated. So here he was, winning basketball games with future NBA players.... talent... and then at the same time getting sucked offf by all the sports world for caring about education...blah blah blah.

Now, even though Jordan took classes like "Black Experience" , we find that the systematic Academic fraud started right after he retired. Like the year after. What are the chances of that? Why would they do that when they were winning and Graduating 96% of their players*... It is all bullshite. He may be a great guy and good X&O coach, but the holier than thou bullshite is what made the whole thing not palatable.

So, y'all can think he was a swell guy who ccared about "student Athletes" and wanted them to graduate or maybe he was a guy who wanted to win basketball games at a school with above average acaedemic standards with players who were not above average in academics which created what is the most comprehensive and embarassing culture of systematic academic cheating that has so far been exposed in NCAA Semi Pro history. It is just baffling how he graduated 96%, yet this scheme was needed to be put in place tight after he left.... to keep players eligible ....

It has nothing to do with people on this board (I'll assume you meant me) not respecting him. It's the fact that he has literally nothing to do with Georgia Sports and this is a, wait for it....Georgia Sports Board.

The MSB had a ton of talk about Dean Smith, seeing as how that's the appropriate board. We can turn this place into the OT if you want with a daily lunch thread (and nightly snack thread!), weather updates, who's backchanneling who, who's on a diet, what kinda workouts you did this morning, etc etc but personally I'd like to see the board remain about all things UGA.

Is it really that big of a deal if it moves this board along a little during the offseason??

all I did was ask if he coached in Athens. Then others got upset over the "disrespect" smith was getting.

Ultimately no, it's not a big deal, it's just totally unnecessary.

I just typed out a really badass retort, then remembered that you're pretty cool IRL so I deleted it.

Ok - he was a great guy and all ---- but most of you younger guys never got to see his team run his 'four corners' offense.

It was the most boring thing basketball ever saw. With 10-12 minutes left in the game, if NC got so much as a 5 point lead, NC went to the 'four corners'. It was stall, stall, stall - until they got fouled. Then the action picked up as someone got to shoot free throws.

It set college basketball back so far that the higher NCAA powers installed the 45 second clock (now the 35 second clock).

It was boring, it wasn't offense, and it wasn't basketball.

You mean he stretched the spirit of the rules of a game to win? Shocker...
