Returning starters in Bold/Underline

PITCHERS
Tori Finucane(SO)(21-6, 1.73 ERA, 168 K, 57 BB): Tori is an All-SEC selection. She had an OUTSTANDING freshman season. She has a wide arsenal of pitches. Of the 2 freshman pitchers last year, it was Finucane who put up Chelsea Thomas like numbers.

Paige Lowary(FR): Freshman pitcher who has looked solid in the fall and in the scrimmage. This lefty can absolutely bring it from the circle. The biggest question was whether she could develop a change up. According to most, she did exactly that and showed it in the scrimmage game.

Cheyenne Baxter(SO): A transfer from Omaha, she will actually have an important function on the team, eating up mop up innings and starting and going deep in mid-week games. Because Mizzou starts a week later than most, they have more mid-week games later. This can lead to burning out arms if you only have 1 or even 2 starters. Having a 3rd one to help out in those mid-week games can be crucial.

CATCHER
Sami Fagan(JR)(.342, 10 2b's)): Was originally a transfer from Florida and finished the season last year catching for the Tigers. If Mack(below) can take over the catching duties, it would be a huge boost for the Tigers by being able to put Fagan at 2nd.

Kirsten Mack(SO)(.225, 3 HR's): Came in as a highly touted recruit but was a bit overwhelmed as a freshman. As was indicated, if she can meet those expectations and take over the catching role, it will give the team a lot of flexibility elsewhere.

Alyssa Cousins(SR)(.154): Played sparingly and will continue to play sparingly. A 3rd catcher is a nice luxury, but that is exactly what she is.

FIRST BASE
Kelsea Roth(SR)(.256, 8 HR's): Has first base locked up. A third year starter, Roth has a lot of pop in her bat. Her numbers were bigger her sophomore year than junior year, but she's already showed off the pop in her bat in the scrimmage game.

Jordan Zolman(SO)(.067): Didn't play much as a freshman and probably won't play much as a sophomore with Roth holding down the corner.

SECOND BASE
Natalie Fleming(SO): If Fagan ends up catching, I expect to see Fleming at 2nd. She saw some playing time as a freshman, but because of a transfer and injury, the job might be Fleming's by default unless a freshman ousts her or Fagan is freed up to play 2nd.

Paige Bang(FR): Not sure if she plays 2nd, but bet she can. She had a solid fall and scrimmage and opened some eyes. Would not be surprised to see her given some opportunities at 2nd.

THIRD BASE
Amanda Sanchez(FR): Thought highly enough as a recruit and showed the ability in the fall and in the scrimmage, it appears as though the freshman is going to win the hot corner spot. That's a good thing as there are returning players who've played 3rd. Sanchez is getting the spot because she's that good. Not because there is no one else.

SHORTSTOP
Corrin Genovese(SR)(.410, 5 HR's): Don't be surprised if Genovese is an All-SEC player by seasons end. A returning starter, she's solid in nearly all phases of the game.

LEFT FIELD
Angela Randazzo(SR)(.349, 7 HR's): Randazzo played some 3rd base last year. There is an open spot in left field this year and Randazzo was given the shot in the scrimmage game. She has a good enough bat that as long as she isn't a complete liability in the OF, I can see her winning the position.

Kayla Kingsley(JR): My pick in the fall to ultimately win back the spot after an injury last year. Unfortunately, it just never seems she can get over the injury bug. A lot of talent that just has never had the chance to show itself on the field.

CENTER FIELD
Taylor Gadbois(JR)(.421, 46 SB): Another returning starter, Gadbois has speed to burn. She'll cover ground in the outfield and steal some bases. She was another pre-season All-SEC player who I expect big things from this year.

RIGHT FIELD
Emily Crane(JR)(.389, 4 HR, 17 SB): Yet another returning starter, Crane is consistent and reliable.

Anna Reed(SO): A JUCO transfer who put up big numbers at Jefferson College, has some adjusting to do, playing in the SEC. If she plays, it will be sparingly.

UTILITY(Because they're freshman and I don't know where they'll fit in)
Sara Harvey(FR): Another one of those players who broke every school record in the book. Will probably be used, but sparingly, as Mizzou has so many returning starters.

Sydney Sprague(FR): Another player that Mizzou has the luxury of bringing along slowly instead of throwing right into the fire. Again, set all kinds of records in high school.

Morgan Walters(FR): Yet another of a very solid incoming freshman class. Mainly plays on the corners but could compete for the left field spot as well.

2014 Season

43-18 (15-9)

SEC Stanings
Alabama 19 5
Tennessee 17 7
Florida 15 9
Georgia 15 9
Missouri 15 9
Kentucky 13 11
LSU 13 11
Auburn 11 13
South Carolina 11 13
Mississippi State 10 14
Texas A&M 9 15
Arkansas 5 19
Ole Miss 3 21

NCAA Tournament

Mizzou beat Bradley and kU in the regional, double elimination tournament, before losing to Nebraska twice in a row. No excuses, but we did lose Finucane by this time to a thumb injury suffered in a practice and were forced to go with the lesser Stangle, who has since transferred out of Missouri.

2015 Season
1 UF
3 Bama
6 UK
12 UGA
13 UT
17 MIZZOU
19 LSU
20 Auburn
24 A&M

Only SC, MSU, Arky and OM are not ranked in the preseason top 25.

Home Series
20 Auburn
MSU
19 LSU
1 UF

Away Series
SC
13 UT
12 UGA
Arky

The conference games set up favorable for Mizzou. Of the road series, 2 are against unranked teams and Mizzou should win the series. The other 2 road series are against teams on about equal footing with Mizzou and should result in 1, if not 2, wins in each series. Getting UF is tough, but getting them at home takes some of the sting out. Just as big, Mizzou misses having to play #3 Bama and #6 UK along with #24 A&M and OM.

Softball plays one of the best non-con schedules of all the programs at Mizzou. Featured games are against:

UCLA (#7)
Arizona (#14)
Minnesota (#15)
Notre Dame (#22)
Louisville (received votes)
UCF (received votes)
Cal State Fullerton (received votes)
Texas (received votes)
James Madison (received votes)
NC State (received votes)

General Thoughts
Other teams will have played a weeks worth of games when we're facing them for the first time. I think this puts Mizzou at a distinct disadvantage, but coach EE has his reasons for it.

This team has all of the pieces to the puzzle falling into place this year and next. They have the offense with numerous returning starters. Gadbois, Fagan, Roth, Crane, Randazzo and Genovese all have a proven track record of producing. Sanchez has swung a big bat and played outstanding defense at 3rd base as a true freshman. There are too many weapons for this team to go into prolonged slumps.

Pitching will be a key. Finucane is a top level pitcher. I expect her to only be better. Look for her ERA to be below 1.50. The keys will be what we have after her. Last year, Stangel never lived up to expectations. While she had the physical tools, she didn't have the mental tools. This year, Lowary comes in closer to what Finucane offered as opposed to Stangel from last year. The one concern was the lack of a change up, and she has apparently developed that pitch already. If she puts up numbers similar to Finucane's numbers as a freshman, this team can make a serious run.

Just the thoughts of some Average Joe who has never seen this years team actually play.

Softball starts this week.

Fri 12/13 10:00 a.m. vs. Louisville
Fri 12/13 12:30 p.m. vs. Chattanooga
Sat 12/14 10:00 a.m. vs. UCF
Sat 12/14 12:30 p.m. vs. Cleveland State
Sun 12/15 10:30 a.m. vs. South Dakota State

All part of the Dot Richardson Invitational in California.

Louisville and UCF should be good competition. Would like to think we can sweep the weekend however. I would think Finucane throws against Louisville and UCF and Lowary goes against Chattanooga and Cleveland State. Wouldn't be surprised to see Baxter get some innings if the games are blow outs or maybe even the start against South Dakota State.

Not sure if any of them will be televised or on watchespn or secnetworkplus.

That would be awesome. I'm not sure they're online at all. I'm sure I'll have gametracker on in the background, but just not the same, so updates on how they looked would be awesome.

Crap. My bad. I was looking ahead.

You got anything to add or correct on the preview? You know the softball much more than I do.

Added an extra game Sunday at 8 a.m. against #13 Minnesota. Their OOC schedule is unlike almost any other sport.

2-0

Awesome start to the season.

Game 1 vs. Louisville (a solid team)
5-1 - Finucane got the start and pitched all 7, giving up 1 ER. Roth and Genovese were the only players without a hit. Of note, freshman Sanchez started at 3B and got her first hit. The other huge news from this game is that sophomore Mack, who wasn't expected to start due to injury, did and not just started behind the plate but went 2 for 3. If she keep that up, it completely transforms this team. Not only would it mean we have a solid catcher, now we have a better player at 2B as that is where Fagan should and did play. It then gives more options for LF, which it did, allowing Fleming to play LF when she would have otherwise have had to move to 2B.

Game 2 vs. Chattanooga

6-1 - Debut for freshman phenom Lowary on the mound. And she lived up to billing, albeit against Chattanooga. 6 innings, 6 K's, 0 ER's. Roth and Genovese got their first hits of the young season. Mack didn't but did walk twice. Sanchez got another hit, playing 3B. Fleming played both games in LF. I was a bit surprised EE didn't use this game to rotate some players in LF, maybe one of the freshmen even.

Just as with baseball, awesome start to the season. Even better because the softball team can hit. Lowary, Mack and Sanchez were the stories of the first day IMO.

Lost a tough one 1-0 to UCF, who's a borderline top 25 team. Will likely move into the top 25 with that win. What can ya say. 1 hit. Not gonna win games that way. Finucane pitched 6.1 innings, and gave up 0 ER's. Tough way to take a loss. UCF scored on an error in the bottom of the 7th to win.

Lineup was pretty much the same with Mack catching, Fagan at 2B and Fleming in RF.

Switched up the lineup a bit for the 2nd game today. Mizzou up 4-1 in the 6th. Fagan caught (and hit an HR), Mack played 1B, Fleming 2B, Randazzo LF and Zolman DH. Roth at 1B was the odd woman out.

Mizzou wins 4-2. Freshman Lowary pitched solid. 5.1 innings, 1 ER, 8 K's. She seems to be even more of a strikeout pitcher than Finucane.

Mizzou up 4-0 on South Dakota State. Back to the original lineup with the only change being Randazzo in LF, Cousins DH, meaning Fleming is the odd one out.

Baxter got the start and has throw 4 innings, giving up 1 hit and striking out 5 so far.

All kinds playing. All kinds hitting. Up 10-0. Finucane came in to relieve Baxter and has damn near struck out everyone she's faced.

T7: #BIRTHDAYBLAST number two! Sami Fagan punches another ticket to #BombCity for her second HR of the game. #Mizzou leads 12-0.

Make it 12-0 with Fagan's 2nd HR. Think it's her 3rd of the year already.
