Starting a new race week.

This weekend my in laws were in town. I love my in-laws and they really wonderful people. I prefer them to my parents.

We mentioned that we saw that one of my wife's cousins was in a relationship and we saw it on facebook. My MiL put on her best teacher gossip voice and said that my uncle wasn't too happy about it. We asked why and she said "well... He's black"

My wife looked at each other and said "annnnnd?"

She said "well how would you feel if your boys were dating a black girl?"

We replied that we wouldn't care one way or another. I could tell that took them by surprise. They said the " well the cultures are just different and wouldn't mix well" line that I've heard before. But we left the conversation disagreeing that there's anything wrong with the situation. Not too heated, but I could tell they were uncomfortable and surprised by our response.

Now to defend my MiL, she was a coach and has been invited by 2 different black athletes as their guest to inductions to hall of fames (one college and one Texas Sports) and has a great relationship with them to this day.

I wouldn't call what she said hateful, but I wouldn't call it particularly tolerant or "with the times," but I would say it's the most upset I've been with her in 10 years of marriage.

My wife and I were talking earlier that evening in bed that we felt it was pretty racist but they didn't view it as such. Especially compared to their parents which I've both heard say n****r on more than one occasion.

My question is (on a macro level) do you think that racism gets a little less with each generation, or is it still alive and well like Jesse Jackson, Al Sharpton, and the Selma director say?

I can submit both, because I know people in my age bracket that are just as racist as my grandparents in this day. I have cousins on my side that can't get through a thanksgiving without saying it multiple times combined with some pretty harsh language.

But I also feel like her grandfather (a southern baptist preacher that says n****r at least one per visit) never spoke poorly of anybody black and her parents who are kind people but definitely saw a difference between the two and maybe even subscribed to "separate but equal" compared to where my wife and I are as proof that it has improved.

Thoughts?

Yes. Racism will never not exist, but it isn't and won't be as overt and violence-inducing as it has been. However, that's actually arguably a worse circumstance given that it's more likely for institutional racism to be tolerated and accepted.

I think our generation definitely subscribes to more institutional racism, that is being racist because of protocols or rules set in place that are inherently racist. However, I think our racial generations also interact and communicate much better than past generations.

Mixed relationships don't bother me unless it's a black guy and a white guy.

You think it's racism? Maybe it's just a comfort level thing with your in laws. If she's willing to coach other races then it seems like she's just more comfortable around similar types of people (actual types of people, not skin color).

Racism will always exist to some degree. I'm pretty sure that the whole "racism is taught and not genetic" thing was disproven. There was a study done on babies and in the study it showed that the babies had a natural tendency to be comfortable around people with the same skin color as them. That's not hateful racism but it's racism nonetheless. When someone says "I've never said or done anything racist at all in my life" they are full of shite.

We just elected a black president in the last decade. Racism will never die, but it is certainly not even in the same stratosphere as it was a century ago, where a black president would have been killed 10 minutes into taking office.

Probably. At least I'm past it.

Better than being a first generation a-hole.

Well not in the US but in other places around the world, including Europe, it's still pretty damn bad.

Anyone that thinks this has never been to Europe. France, Paris in particular, is racist as hell.

I think a better word Is prejudice, a preconceived opinion that is not based on reason or actual experience. Many people have irrational views towards other people.

Generally, those views are taught to us in our families. As families have changed over the past half century, so have popular prejudices against women in the workplace, ethnicities, gays, immigrants and a host of other groups of people.

That's a good thing.

If that's how people feel for whatever reason Dosen't make them or the situation racist. Some people just feel this way (all races). They don't necessarily hate the other races, just feel races shouldn't mix.

If I had a daughter, I wouldn't let her date most forms of whites, including but not limited to waps, jews, span-spics, caucazoids, micks, limeys, krauts, ruskies, huskies, armenians, slavs, klavs, or upper-persians.

Don't even get me started on dark skinned people.

I don't know. I guess I think that racism will always exist, it's just part of human nature, but I also think that past generations were far more overtly racist.

Both my Grandfathers were mega racists and not your usual anti-black racist, like weird racists...Irish, Poles, Catholics oh and Jews. It's not that they loved African Americans, they just weren't exposed to them enough to have a strong opinion so I think exposure is a big point too.
