In 90 the Gardner Museum in Boston had multiple classics stolen. In the will left by the donator of the art the pieces can not be replaced, so there are empty frames where everything that was stolen hung.
13 priceless items were taken: three paintings by Rembrandt including, "The Storm on the Sea of Galilee," five drawings by Degas, and Vermeer's "The Concert" -- said to be the most valuable stolen painting in the world.
The US Attorney in Boston has said they will not prosecute if you have the art.
Would you return it or keep it?

Say I stole it and for some reason haven't sold it. What is motivating me to bring it back?

As long as they do not bring a cable guy, repo man, or a creditor I'm good.

What I find funny is they wont prosecute you for the theft, as they know you did not do the theft. But they dang sure will prosecute you for theft by recieving and possesion of stolen property.
I do not think any of these works of art will be returned, unless a great immunity deal is worked out.

Yeah, sure.
"I like your painting. I will give you 50 billion dollars for it"
"Uhh dude, can't you see it's a Vermeer? GTFO"

I mean what are you going to do with Rembrandt's "The Storm on the Sea of Galilee," ? Hang it up in your man cave? It may be priceless but its not something you can easily sell or liquidate for cash.
