For UT followers: Mike DeBord has told his staff, colleagues at Michigan that he is leaving for Vols, per source w/ knowledge of situation.
Not exactly a huge fan of this hire but I'll trust in Butch

Seems to be a pretty meh hire to most UT fans. I know nothing about him. Can any one give me the deets?

Very short version: Guy has tons of experience in college and the NFL and at multiple positions. He has national championship ring from when he was an OC at UM and while he was at UM ran Carr's offense for the most part which was old school. However, DeBord also installed the spread during bowl prep and ran what amounts to our offense against Urban Meyer and Florida (that was Carr's final farewell and FWIW, Michigan destroyed UF that game). DeBord's last job was in the NFL and he stuck around after Lovie Smith was canned missing the hiring cycle for coaches. That's how he landed back at UM under and administrative position that looked suspiciously like a way to get around the limits on coaches (he was far more involved in football than his job title suggests).
However the most important thing about this hire is continuity. The DeBord was HC and CBJ was his OC so really it's a more promote from within type of hire than it appears. DeBord will run CBJ's offense - no change in terminology, no drastic changes in scheme, maybe a few tweaks here and there, hopefully an improvement in the run game (just punching it in the endzone has proved near impossible for us a few years even when we had the all world line) and some help on the oline (DeBord has worked with olines before and hopefully he'll be an extra set of eyes there too).
He's not the kind of hire that fanbases are going to be pleased with because there's no flash to it and it seems odd at first but when you know more about him and understand why it's a solid choice.
The goal of this hire is consistency and improvement and maybe a few tweaks here or there not a big splash or change. We want to run the exact same offense with the exact same terms etc. and keep building on Jones' system and this hire accomplishes that better than any other hire would.

quote:That offense was 44th/112 (total offense and scoring). The defense was #1.

46th off/49th scoring in 98.
49th o/31st scoring in 99.
His second stint:
06- 38th/26th
07- 68th/63rd
So he never broke the top 25 in any meaningful category as a play caller.
quote:Right. That's why he didn't get a job. I guess he missed the coaching hiring cycle the next year too.

Harbaugh had an opening at OC. I guess he preferred to hire someone other than an Olympic sports administrator.

DeBord was 12-34 as HC (5-17 with Butch as RB coach, 7-17 with Butch as OC).
In 02, they were 62nd in offense, 92nd in scoring.
in 03, 69 in off, 79 in scoring.

Only time will tell whether this is a good hire or not. Butch has done nothing but great things so far... why doubt him now?

You don't see a whole new culture on the field?
You don't see teams that keep fighting to the final gun instead staying in the locker room at halftime?
You don't see a whole new confidence and swagger in the team?

I agree. He has improved every aspect of the program. Outside of a few questionable play calls, he has been money. Honestly though, give me a coach that doesn't have the fanbase pissed over a few play calls throughout the season.

He's a great motivator and a great salesman. No question about it. His staff and on-field decision making leave plenty to be desired.
I'm a fan of UT. Not of a coach. If the present coach gets it done, I'm happy. If not, gtfo. They're hired guns and nothing more. Of course I want Lyle and DeBored to be successful, and if they are, I will be the first to eat crow. I just think it's a pathetic and lazy hire. Recruits are great, but I honestly can't see them getting it done on the field. Which is the only thing that really matters.

Azzani and Gillespie just got promoted. Coach Z is now passing game coordinator and Coach G. is now recruiting coordinator.

I just can't invest the energy in picking this hire apart until I see the product on the field next fall. Not an exciting hire though I will say that I hope it works out.

100% agree. I'll support the coach but sometimes the demigod status is weird, especially for those who haven't won anything of significance. I hope Butch does well and I think he has done a damn good job (all considered) up to this point, all he has to do now is win.

The fact that this guy hasn't coached in years is alarming. I feel like that these coaches almost need to stay out of the way in some respects for UT to be successful.

Same here, but I give due credit.
Butch had to put out a dumpster fire before he could even start on the rebuilding.
Has he been perfect? No. However, this program had been in a nosedive for a long time. We're finally gaining a little altitude.

This hire means Butch does not give a damn who is the coordinator, he will win regardless of who calls the plays.

I really hate this propaganda. If it's a solid hire it will stand on it's own merits .
