I'm trying to replace carpet in a few rooms. First, there is a huge range in prices. No two places have the exact same carpet to compare, and they all have hundreds of different types. Some price pad and installation together with the carpet. Some price each separately. This is a rare case where Google doesn't seem to help much.

I like to research purchases that may be up to $5000. Any thoughts on where to find unbiased and good information?

Yeah, it's maddening. We had some carpet replaced with an insurance claim a few years ago and we ended up with some real shitty carpet. Unfortunately it coincided with a bunch of other shite going on or we'd have just put hardwood floors down. The carpet we put down already needs replacing.

Some store gave the wife 5 or 6 books of carpet samples, and some interior decorator came and picked the carpet and color we needed. I was skeptical with her choice as the sample piece just felt cheap. Turns out I was right. It looks good in the corners, but looks awful in high traffic areas. No idea the brand.

I agree with this 100%. We have hardwood in the foyer, family room, dining room, and halls.

But my wife wants carpet in the bedrooms. And since I really don't care enough to quibble over it, I'm looking to replace carpet.

Spleen, this is exactly what I don't want - spend four or five grand and have it look like shite in a couple of years.

Hardwood and be done. Add area rugs to taste.

Shop around and you can find great deals. It lasts forever, doesn't end up looking like shite after 2 years, and doesn't hold dust, animal dander, other allergens, etc. Cleaning up spills is a breeze.

The wood floor in my house was installed in 1907. It's been refinished 1 time. It looks great.

ETA: The carpet in my office was installed 3 years ago. It was over my objection with my landlord, and was supposed to be high traffic commercial carpet. It is regularly vacuumed and cleaned and looks like some kid dragged his red white and blue rocket pop across it and then ground it into the carpet in several places.

Yeah it makes me sick every time I see it. We had a berber carpet down that got damaged and I liked that carpet, but the decorator convinced the wife berber was out of style. Then she tells us to go with this cheap arse carpet.

I'm getting pissed typing this.

Carpet sucks and you have to replace it like you mentioned in the first sentence. This is why it's a bad idea.

Ok, I'll tell my wife that we have to get hardwoods and area rugs and she can just deal with it. I'll set her arse skraight!

I appreciate all the help guys - that's why I love this place.

This. Although I have concrete all through the first floor of my house. It's nice having it because of dogs and kids, but I prefer hardwood.

Do this. Go hardwood, always. Area rugs can be changed when you want to redecorate or upgrade, but the hardwood floors will last a lifetime, look better and are healthier since they don't hold allergens.

Another vote for hardwood.

But take this warning from a woman who just renovated and redecorated a house - good rugs are EXPENSIVE.

You about to spend a lot more than your budget. Prayers sent.

You give her the hardwood. You show her who's boss.

I get this. I really do. But here is the immediate downside. Installation is a mess and takes several days rather than just one. And y'all got me thinking so I called the guy that laid our floors a few years ago. I got a ballpark quote that is about double the cost of carpet.

This will not be an easy sell.

Maybe e'rbody in the house can wear slippers.

I know I'm in the minority but I've never been a huge fan of hardwood floors in bedrooms, unless it's a historic home with hardwoods throughout.

Living room, dining room, formal room, absolutely hardwoods. But not bedrooms. That's just a personal preference.

Replace carpet every 5-7 years. Replace hardwood never.

Increases the resale value of your home.

Find the wood on sale, measure and buy it yourself. Find someone who does install on the side, or some low cost laborers, and pay cash.

Yeah but area rugs can be just as expensive as carpet and need replacing as well.
