Did I just hear ESPN say we have hired John Hoke?

ETA: From "John" to "Jon."

It certainly appears imminent:

I read the article too. Some serious shake up is about to go down I guess. Wonder where Whammy fits in...

How good have Hoke's defenses been in the past? I saw some stats from 99-02, but what about his pro defenses, where'd they rank?

Gator fans considered Hoke to be the worst Gator defensive coordinator at any level from Pop Warner and up. Of course, he was not NEARLY as bad as they made him out to be. When he took over in 1999, he inherited a defense that lost 8 starters, to include two 1st rounders and 2 second rounders, along with a 3d rounder. It took two years for him to get the defense back in shape, and when he did, he had a 9th ranked defense in 2001.

Of course, every game Florida lost was Hoke's fault, as no fan would ever blame Spurrier, so he should feel right at home...

I just thought this was interesting.

A guy that hasn't coordinated a defense since 2002 is who Spurrier hires to run the defense?

I'd rather see Ward stay DC and hire a new linebacker and defensive line coach.

John Hoke By The Numbers

You are what your record says you are and you are good or bad at what the statistics say you're good or bad at. Like I did for a few coaches we've looked at or hired in the past, I put together a spreadsheet of their rankings for various statistics.

So I did the spreadsheet for Hoke. Below is the data from 1999-2014
Keep in mind though, he wasn't a DC the whole time.

1983 North Carolina State (DB)
1983–1986 Bowling Green (DB)

1994–1998 Missouri (DB)
1999–2001 Florida (DC/DB)

That's what I'm trying to figure out. However, it has to be taken into consideration that he wasn't the DC, and the NFL is a completely different ball game.

Although, I'm about to calculate the averages and we'll see what it looks like

The Bears have been awful the past two seasons and were historically turrible last season.

This hire is fricking retarded

I'll save you some work and say they will look like shite.

If he is the DC it will be an awful hire. He hasn't been a DC in over a DECADE and has been a position coach for one of the worst defense in NFL history the past two seasons

This is what happens when you wait til after signing day and all the good choices have made their moves

I just hope he's a whole lot better than his younger brother was at Michigan.

He's actually got a very strong resume in terms of who he has worked for. And he couldn't be that bad or he would not have had a job all these years.

I just did the averages.

Hoke was a Top 20-25 DC the years he was at Florida...under Spurrier.

Hoke was an Avg to Below Avg NFL DB Coach over 13 seasons on 2 different teams. He had some awesome years, and then several crappy years.

The Pro game is completely different than college though. Pro Coaches don't deal with recruiting, but they still have to scout and manage talent with players. Also, they can be vetoed on personnel decisions by Front Office staff and Owners and budgets. Again though, it's important to consider that he was just a DB Coach in the NFL, the defense weren't all to his credit, nor all his fault.

With all that said, and the data reviewed, I don't think Hoke is that much of an upgrade from Ward. Ward had 3 years in the Top 20 for Total Defense before his debacle that was this season. I also think that if Ward had better DE's and CB's this year, that this would've never happened. Although, he's responsible for recruiting the defense, and he didn't do great in '12, '13 or '14 to address that.

So is Hoke some stellar recruiter? You can't find the people he recruited to UF in Rivals or the other sites.

I don't think SOS brought him in for no reason. He has wanted him here since day one. He must have made a big enough impression on him from his last three years at Florida to want him here still 11 years later.

That's a fair point. I learned something new a moment ago. They didn't track recruiters as coaches like they do now on 247 and Rivals, when Hoke was at uf.

However, uf's '03-'05 defense were pretty good, especially '05 and those would've been Hoke's recruits.
