Gonzaga’s Richie Petitbon gets his final-game moment in basketball

By Joey LoMonaco February 28 at 12:08 PM

The outcome of Thursday night’s WCAC final was everything but decided when a pair of purple high tops — size 16 — toed the edge of the lane and dug into the hardwood block at American University’s Bender Arena in anticipation of a DeMatha free throw. Big Richie Petitbon, an unmissable No. 2 in a Gonzaga jersey, checked into the game with 16 seconds left in double overtime of the final game of his senior season.

Moments later, while the heroes of the night, guards Chris Lykes and Bryant Crawford, jumped up onto the tables at press row and tangoed, the grandson of a legendary Washington Redskins defensive coordinator snared fellow big man Sam Miller in a hug to celebrate the 77-68 win.

“That was so awesome for Coach [Steve] Turner to give me that opportunity,” Petitbon said. “Just for the those last seconds to be in there was really, really special.”

It’s no secret around I Street N.W. that this behemoth of a left tackle and recent Alabama signee has moonlighted as a center for four years. And where other similarly blessed pigskin standouts might specialize at the detriment of other athletic pursuits, Petitbon always honored his commitments to Turner and the Eagles’ basketball program.

“There were times when I wasn’t sure he would come back, because he’d started focusing on his main sport, which is football,”
Turner said.

“But Richie is the ultimate Gonzaga man. He’s a team guy. He’s huge for us in the locker room. His voice stands strong to our players in the things that he says. He means a lot to them. He’s a leader — he’s not named a captain, but he pretty much is one.”

In nine games this season, Petitbon averaged 2.1 points with a season-high of six against Georgetown Prep on Dec. 21.

After basketball season, Petitbon has a resounding three-day rest period before the onset of the WCAC lacrosse season. He plays attack for the Eagles, where, “I get to score all the goals, which is nice,” he said.

Additionally he’s adhering to Alabama’s strength and conditioning program. He’ll leave in late May for Tuscaloosa, and the start of his college football career. But in the meantime, another purple-clad team needs Petitbon’s services. And he’s glad to oblige.

“For me, I just like to have stuff to do,” he said. “I love the team aspect, I just love it so much.”

Can we please make Trayvon Mullen a priority, he and Carter together would be a no fly zone for our D.

I don't know why our staff seems to be pissing around on that recruitment. He didn't even mention us as one of the schools that was recruiting him hard.

Is 247Sports Composite 4-star running back Devin White interested in Auburn? The Springhill, La. product talked to AuburnUndercover about his recruitment, and specifically his intrigue with Auburn, who offered White one week ago.

"I called Auburn and talked to Coach (Tim) Horton and Coach (Rhett) Lashlee, I wasn't surprised," White said. "I've talked to Coach (Will) Muschamp, Coach (Lance) Thompson, too. Auburn has just started to really recruit me harder, but I've talked to all those coaches. I've talked to Coach (Scott) Fountain, probably him and Coach Horton I've talked to most so far."

Auburn initially offered White as a running back. White rushed for 2,287 yards and 30 touchdowns last fall. After watching White's linebacker film, however, the Tigers made sure White knew that offer was good for defense also.

"I think Auburn will be a top school with my recruitment," White said. "They run what my high school runs, which is the wing-T, but out of different formations. It's also exciting to think about potentially playing linebacker for someone like Muschamp, I could see myself doing that."

Most schools are recruiting White at running back, with some interest in White's linebacker skills. LSU, Alabama and Ole Miss are currently the Crystal Ball favorites to land White.

"I can't even predict where I want to go to school right now, so predictions are just predictions," White said. "I don't know where I'm going, I'm trying to find that right place."

So they took the term suicide watch and applied it to recruiting. I guess it makes sense here.

From the LSUrb, on Devin White:

For months now he's been talking to his classmates a lot more about AL than other schools. Personally, I wouldn't be the least bit surprised it Devin ends up at AL.

Javontay Smith, UNC commit and Jawon Pass's teammate, wants to visit us in March. His recruitment has been blowing up lately, with a recent offer from LSU. He says he is 100% committed to UNC.

Who cares, tell him he can play RB and then move him to FB. Saban knows what's better for this kid, then the kid knows.
