Just found out I was accepted to the University of Arkansas Medical Sciences. I live about 30 minutes outside of Baton Rouge, so can anyone that lives there in Little Rock or has been there numerous times tell me how it is? I've only been there once for the interview

You were supposedly accepted into med school and this is where you research the city that the school is in. I'd have preferred that you ask for help during your first surgical procedure. That's what we are really good at.

Congrats!

What do you want to know? You can usually find lots of rental housing available just north and east of the campus. WLR is more suburban, if that's your style.

ETA: Stay north of I-630, unless you want to go downtown, then you're good until Roosevelt Ave.

I'm going to pharmacy school, so I won't be operating on anyone. All the health professions are together

Yeah I heard there were some bad areas, but I don't have the first clue of where to look for an apartment at. If you know of any apartment complexes close to the school that would help.

Immediately surrounding the med center are older neighborhoods, so there aren't too many apartment complexes. You're more likely to find a house to rent (or a room).

There are a few complexes in Midtown. Park Avenue is brand new, but last I heard, they had a waiting list. Hubs was living in the Lanai Apartments when we started dating. Much older, but basic and well run when he lived there (although that was 10 years ago).

There are also some older (like 1940's) units along Kavanaugh in Hillcrest. Probably find those on craigslist.

Go ask this on woopig.net (crapola subforum), or citydata, Little Rock forum.

If you're able to navigate BR, then LR should be a piece of cake.

Downtown is nice and very lively. Lots of lofts and apts, but probably hard to get a good deal on one. Hillcrest and the Heights are good areas near UAMS, too. WLR is the nicer area of the city. LR isn't large enough for any commute to be too horrible.

Riverdale might be another option, along the river, west of downtown and not too far a drive to UAMS, either.

Next time you visit, check out the river trail downtown, the River Market district downtown, Main St, and try to go out west to Pinnacle Mountain park. LR has some impressive nature, especially if you are used to the flatlands of SoLa.

If it's anything like the lobotomy so many people on here have gone through, you gotta remember to not touch the vestibulocochlear nerve. You'll never hear the end of it.

I went to UAMS so ask away. If you want to live close, Hillcrest is your best bet. Lots of rent houses, although it's become a lot more popular so it's more expensive these days. If you are thinking apartments, check out Riverdale/Rebsamen area. They are lots of nice apartments and it's a 5 min drive to UAMS. It's also close to great biking/hiking area around the Big Dam Bridge. Lots of apartments out west but you'll fight more traffic coming in. I wouldn't recommend south of I-630.

I lived there and Conway, Arkansas for 3 years. It's really not my cup of tea, but the city itself is pretty nice. The scenery and outdoors stuff is second to none. But other than that it's pretty bland. They have bars and clubs and shite like that but they suck. They don't have any pro sports teams and you can't buy beer on Sundays. Restaurants aren't bad. There's good BBQ to be had in several spots and downtown has a couple decent joints for more upscale choices. Living wise, WLR has a lot more apartments I remember around the Chenal, Green Mountain, Bowman street areas. A lot of subdivisions too. To the south, southeast is all ghetto and crappy. Central is mostly older houses but they rent out all the times but the prices vary. I would look outside of town if you're on a budget. Conway, Mayflower/Maumelle is pretty affordable and halfway decent to live in. Hope that helps.

Lived there from 1990-1997 and loved it. Nice little town, close to all kinds of outdoor activities, easy to get around. At least it was back then. Hope you enjoy it.

True. It's a nice place if you like doing outdoors stuff.

I think Little Rock is pretty under-rated as far as southern cities go. Lots of nature, good downtown, lots of new stuff. The city-proper has actually never had a decade in which it stopped growing (in spite of white flight to a degree), and there are some nice burbs. I lived in a loft down in the RM for a few months. I enjoyed it. The Market pavilion and associated restaurants are great to be near.
