dmagic made a comment that was thought provoking to me.

"a one game elimination tourney isn't a great way to see how good a team is or isn't"
the nba playoffs have series which have great sports drama and it's unlikely the better team won't win. baseball and hockey have series. football doesn't but i'm not sure it's comparable because of the difference in the sports. so, what exactly is the value of the tourney? is a series the only way to determine the true champ?

I like single elimination. Everyone is put on an even playing field when it's just one game. The NBA system is overkill.

This. It gives the underdog a chance.

The best team doesn't always win the tournament, but,as a spectator, it's perfect.

Why would we want to make an awful tournament worse?

Not in baseball due to pitching staff depth.
But basketball, I agree.
NBA does the series to make money and milk all they can from playoffs. Pros will play as many games as unions will let them get away with.

The best would be to go back to 32 teams and do double elimination the first weekend till you get to the Sweet Sixteen or Elite Eight.
#1 Eliminates the early blowout games of top teams obliterating the tiny ones.
#2 Keeps the fans engaged the whole weekend. If your team loses the first night you are usually stuck with a 4 night deal at an overpriced NCAA sanctioned hotel. This way you get to see your team play at least twice and against foes more worthy of a 100 dollar ticket.
#3 Smaller field means putting importance back on winning games in the regular season.
#4 Better early round games means fuller arenas and happier advertisers.

There's nothing to do about it. They won't get rid of it or alter it besides expansion.

Look...I have plenty to complain about with the NBA playoffs, but it does the best job of any sport, pro or college, in crowning the best team. Hockey and baseball series can be flukes, but put 2 basketball teams out there for 7 games and the best team is going to win.
Nothing beats March Madness though. The best team may not always win, but it is very exciting.

quote:interesting. that would alleviate fluke games but, i suppose someone could say that with the current format, every possession is precious. therefore, don't squander any games.

also, 350 teams in the division but only 32 teams in the tourney seems disproportionate. i would like to see the division reduced. 350 teams is ridiculous. then 32 would be more acceptable

Considering the first round games are usually blowouts and the tickets are 100 to 150 per game it would sure help fill venues it the 2 teams playing were actually worth watching. By limiting the field and making better teams play each other more you would need to not only squander any tournament games but you would also need to not squander any regular season games.

32 teams would be roughly 10% of 350 or viewed from the academic sense, you would only be watching the A students as opposed to the B and C as well (and the occasional D student who lucks in and then gets kicked out)
If the Power 5 break away from the NCAA as is already happening then you would have around 64 schools so going back to 32 or 16 and playing double elimination would increase game quality and help fill arenas again. In theory you could create greater demand with closer games for the fans actually paying good money to see the games.
