Destino is what he was built up to be. True FR and his first collegiate series he HR's.

I was really impressed with Widener closing and Crowe on Saturday. CofC just had Wynkoops number on Friday

so we opened the year a ith a series against a ranked team, a d we won. Good

Yeah I wouldn't worry about the L. Vandy, OM, and UT all lost as well as ranked teams. (AU too I think)

35 degrees at first pitch. Furman with 2 runs in their first 3 at bats.

Carolina has put 4 across B3 with a bases clearing triple from Caldwell and a seeing-eye single from Martin against an infield shift.

Bright grounds into a 6-4-3 to end the inning.

4-2 Carolina T4. Schmidt back to the bump after Vogel pulled B3.

Vogel did not have a good game, he got out of there quick. Luckily we played decent on offense, but we did have our first error of the season. Overall, defense was good though.

Free Article on Destino.

quote:

When Alex Destino was starring at North Buncombe High School in Weaverville, N.C., twice he had the opportunity to spurn South Carolina.

Each time, the decision he made favored the Gamecocks.

First recruited by major programs when he was a sophomore in high school, Destino verbally committed to USC before his junior year in high school (2012-13), electing to travel south to Columbia rather than play for one of the major home state schools such as North Carolina or N.C. State.

quote:

I wasn't born in North Carolina, so I have never had that loyalty to Chapel Hill or Duke or N.C. State like most of the people do from where I'm from," said Destino, who was born in Redlands, Calif., and lived there through kindergarten. "Coming down here and talking to Coach (Chad) Holbrook, who was the recruiting coordinator at the time, he is really good at what he does. I came down here, looked around and was blown away by the people and the facilities here.

"Following college baseball, I knew this place had a pretty good reputation. When Coach Holbrook was promoted to head coach (in August 2012), it was the ideal situation for me because I was so close to him as a recruiter. Now he's my head coach, so that was a big factor. And the people and the fans are no joke."

quote:

"I like Alex in there," Holbrook said. "Between Alex and Max Schrock and Kyle Martin, those are three formidable hitters. We need to get those three guys going to be the type of offensive team we need to be. Alex is a key part. I hate putting that on a freshman, but he needs to do well for us to do well. He's a threat and can provide protection for Kyle Martin or Max depending on how we do the lineup. I have a lot of confidence in him."

Destino has started three of the first four games at designated hitter, batting cleanup twice and fifth once. Entering the weekend, he is hitting .333 (4-12) with one homer, three RBI and a .583 slugging percentage. He has fanned just once in his first 12 at-bats.

Just a quick note about the softball team.

I want to say that they're something like 9-3 / 10-3. Beat #20 Cal tonight and lost to a highly ranked FSU @FSU in extra innings.

They've come a long way from just a few years ago when they barely won 10 games in an entire season and no more than 3-5 SEC games total.

Yep, they've been in the NCAA's for the last 2 years as well. Coach Smith has definitely turned that program around.

Also incase people didn't know:

Beverley is getting it done. She is very competitive and a helluva recruiter. She's a regular visitor to our Cockaboose. She's going to do well here I really believe ... especially now that she has the new facilities. She's really got a palace.

There are some highlights in the link's video. Mooney had a solid tackle at about the 1:20 marker. Got the guy at the knees, elevated him, and wrapped up (the ball around the glove.)

Sign him up for the football team ASAP. Probably one of the better tackles we saw all year.

This could be a tough game (if they play) today against Davidson. They had a couple games cancelled so we don't have a lot of data. They're 3-2. They swept michigan, but lost to NC State and Tenn Tech. They have a couple good hitters and we might get their best pitcher b/c we're the ranked team and they have something to prove. I don't know who that is.

clemson plays a 7-0 Wofford today. I heard clemson is going to have Schmidt pitch, which may be good for us since he's the only one last year who could do anything against us...and we play them this weekend. Hopefully he goes for 8 innings...and they lose 4-3

Today’s game vs. Davidson has been canceled due to inclement weather. No makeup date has been announced as of this time. #Gamecocks

South Carolina has added a non-conference baseball game with High Point on Wednesday, March 4 at 4 p.m. at Carolina Stadium. The game is a makeup date for Carolina after the February 24 game vs. Davidson was canceled due to rain.

Weekend Rotation - Friday: Wil Crowe (So. RHP); Saturday: Jack Wynkoop (Jr. LHP) Sunday: TBA #Gamecocks

I like the move, Crowe's obviously our best starter on staff. Nothing to take away from Koop. I like the fact also that Reagen is not the set Sunday starter, don't think he's proven enough through his first 2 starts to keep the job.
