Would it have helped them get a conviction at the trial court level? Of course, but the defense would have been given an avenue of appeal on a silver platter and in the long run the state may have had to try him again. By voluntarily keeping it of the trial, they still got the conviction with a far less chance of seeing it overturned later.

Ahhh.....I see.....thanks

I think its sad these guys with so much potential ruined their lives. They of course have to accept the consequences of their actions. They committed the crime and they are going to pay the price which according to the articles will be minimum 20 years. yeah - The situation is sad but that doesn't absolve them.

IIRC, 20 years with no chance of parole is the minimum for him (could be 15) but I bet it will be much longer. This is the one time I wouldn't mind a convict being declared a danger and sent to an institution when his time is up (normally I find that shady) but Vandenburg, imo, is a serious danger. This just does not come across as a one time thing for him and TBH, I'm not sure the others would've raped anyone without a guy like Vandenburg in the mix -- those frickers know how to get people to do what they want. Don't get me wrong - they're are still 100 percent culpable and should be convicted and sentenced to the max for it and on some level had to have it in them to do such a monstrous thing (I'm just saying he was the catalyst).

Makes you wonder what kind of mind control he had over the victim (his girlfriend) - was she so trashed/drunk that she had no clue she was being raped and sexually molested?

And the next day when he called her did she not "know" that she had been sexually assaulted? And he talked her into having sex with him the day after, she had no clue what happened until the video went public.........

I wonder how many press conferences Obama will have in regards to this incident?

I can understand that. I tend to consider it a victory for society when people like them are taken off the street relatively early in their criminal careers. I suppose you have a bigger heart than me

What the fricking shitballs!?

The telling them what to do/coaching them was revealed in both the tapes which had him on audio as well as in testimony from McKenzie (also charged -- he testified without a plea though he may get one later since the state has trusted him for a while, even allowing him to leave the state instead of putting him down as a flight risk, house arrest, or giving him a bond he could never hope to pay.

His inability to get it up is revealed in his texts to friends (he texted a Cali friend while it was happening and at one point cited "#penisproblems." His being finished in seconds was testified to by the victim who slept with him the next day -- keep in mind she had no recollection of the night before and trusted him. She said she had 4 drinks but after she was given a drunk (I believe she said it was blue) she remember nothing and was carried by the convicted and accused into Vandenburg's room. There's also video and photos. At one point, Vandenburg and Banks decided to hit her to "make sure she wouldn't wake up." The laughter is also on tape.

My guess is that the recency of the rape turned that motherfricker on. For a guy like him, nothing like the power/control of fricking a girl you just raped legally and would've raped outright had you been able to get it up.

As I said before, this was one sick case.

Guys like this will find whatever weakness a person has and exploit it. She saw bruises but since she was told by him that she dogass drunk and he had to take care of her she probably wrote that off. I mean she trusted him - good looking guy from Vanderbilt so there was likely a lot of false stereotypes/assumptions working for him. That said, he didn't know and since she went dead to the world after the fourth drink and remembers nothing there's a good chance she was roofied.

But guys like this, especially if he's the kinda of monster that was on his way to being a bigger one, exude charm and have the ability to manipulate and convince both women and men.

As the father of a young girl, I find rape to be one of the most dehumanizing, despicable acts man has ever conceived of.

You should feel that way...period. It's despicable if you are the father of a young boy, young girl, or not a father at all.

Yes, he's got a screw loose. If he didn't exist none of this shite happens. I've seen people like him over the years. Just bad news.

As a parent this kind of thing is just horrifying from all angles.

This is a pretty ironic statement considering that the enslavement of Africans in North America predates the emergence of the United States by well over 100 years.

edit: he could have said "400 years" and he would have been close enough

Just curious, where are you getting this info? Trying to find a link to the court docs or a long form article but I'm coming up empty on google.

(Not questioning you, just wanted to read about it)

She was out cold. They had to carry her around. She had no idea what happened until the cops talked to her about it, which was probably at least a week or so afterwards. They would have gotten away with it had there not been some property damage in the building. Security started reviewing the security footage and saw what had happened and called the cops.

Brush up on your history - slavery existed long before there was a United States of America.

Oh, this topic is going to spur a lot of well-reasoned, insightful discussion. I can tell that without reading any further.
