Moved to 0-8 in conference play with tonight's loss. Absolutely unacceptable for Williams-Flournoy to let this happen to women's hoops.

I realize they lost a lot last year and they're extremely young this year but it's her 3rd year. She's destroying what Fortner had built up at the end of her tenure

Good guy.

Not much of a Women's hoop fan, but that is pathetic.

Would anyone outside of the player's families care if they just ended the program?

When Fortner had that good run 4-5 years ago the Cattle Arena was packed out.

Per Title IX Auburn would have to tank a men's program along with it.

Or the equivalent number of scholarships from football or total amount of scholarships divided up between the baseball players

Would we have to cut a men's sport though? Right now, there are more women's sports than men at Auburn (equestrian, soccer, gymnastics).

The number of scholarships has to be even on each side.

Meh. Bama's wimmens managed only 14 conference wins in 7 seasons not too long ago, and had a half dozen streaks of 8 or more losses in a row, including a streak of 20-something defeats.

We're a long way from Ciampi's glory years, but it's hardly reset-button time. You forget we were made it to the 3rd round of the WNIT last year.

Nope pretty sure I remember that and I remember it was with a group of seniors recruited by Nell Fortner. And the WNIT is not the standard by which we should uphold our women's hoops team.

And I'm sure as hell not comparing our program to Alabama's. Why would I want to compare ours to a team that has finished last 3 times in the conference in the last 10 years and has not been above .500 in conference play in 10 years?

Nope. Meeting the criteria of any of the following "prongs" will get you Title IX compliant

quote:

Prong 1: The percentages of male and female athletes are substantially proportionate to the percentages of male and female students enrolled; or
Prong 2: It has a history and continuing practice of expanding athletic opportunities for the underrepresented sex; or
Prong 3: Its athletics program fully and effectively accommodates the interests and abilities of the underrepresented sex.

Well, yeah, but this isn't 1988. The sport is far more competitive in the SEC than it was then. I'm not sure why Fortner called it quits, but Williams-Flournoy seemed like a solid hire at the time.

I freely admit I don't follow the sport closely enough to be an adequate judge of the program. Clearly we're having a shitty season, but I don't know if firing W-F and starting over is the answer (I'm assuming the calls to disband the team are hyperbolic).

I'm interested in your opinion as to what is wrong, and what our options might be. TIA.

Remember that time the women's team played in 3 straight national championship games? That will never happen again.
