I read where as DC for the Bears his defense was ranked 30th of 32 teams. Is this guy a good hire?

He's worked under Saban before. A GA at Michigan State and as DB coach at LSU in 2000.

you should feel great. we was a great db coach in both colege and the nfl, and a very good defensive coordinator at ohio state, cleveland, and jacksonville. only place he was bad was chicago, which had defensive personnel that wouldnt make 75% of other nfl teams. heres some perspective, we just hired a guy for our db position that would have been a 10x better hire for lsu at dc than what they ended up doing

Not only a 7 year dc. But he's been dc at the nfl teams. They were crap teams. But when was the last time Cleveland or Jacksonville had any kind of offense? And he's going to be our position coach. Maybe him and Rico should have a chat.

2008 Cle - 26
2009 Jax - 23
2010 Jax - 28
2011 Jax - 11
2012 Jax - 30
2013 Chi - 30
2014 Chi - 30

Against the pass...
2008 Cle - 14
2009 Jax - 27
2010 Jax - 28
2011 Jax - 8
2012 Jax - 22
2013 Chi - 15
2014 Chi - 30

Looking at it, this guy has coached at some incredibly talent deprived teams. And then he jumps on the Bear's when they lose all of their best D players. But overall, his teams do seem to play better against the pass. Either way, it seems like a damn good hire.

Don't think it matters much. Recruiting is no longer an issue.

It was a liitle tongue and cheek... My 2 best friends are jag and bears fans. The see it as a great hire. I did watch tfat jag pass d hold flacco under 150 on a Thur on Monday night game. I'm kind of on the fence because of the overall D on the pro teams due to the talent or lack thereof... Luckily we are not afflicted with that problem. Hopefully we'll get 2 seasons+ with him before he returns to the NFL.

Either way, I'm glad smart is back to linebackers, where he belongs. but at least we know that our secondary can't get any worse.
