After Early Struggles, Mississippi State a much improved team (Basketball)

STARKVILLE – More than 7,500 fans assembled at Humphrey Coliseum on Saturday to watch an audition. They sat and judged a competition that had little to do with the outcome of the game between Mississippi State and Georgia.
MSU entered the matchup with two straight wins. Through six games in 2015, Rick Ray's team performed well in five of them.
The arena that could barely reach an attendance of 5,000 in December filled to 7,549 on Saturday, when MSU and Georgia took the courts.
Despite the 72-66 loss, MSU (9-10, 2-4 Southeastern Conference) accomplished something it hadn't this season — a legitimate college basketball atmosphere.
"You want the end result to be a win," Ray said. "Just because you didn't get the win doesn't mean you didn't take strides as a basketball team. I think we did (Saturday)."
"I think anybody who's playing college basketball wants an environment," Ray said. "From us coming off our trip to Auburn, where I thought that was a terrific environment, I thought our fans did a great job to provide another good environment."
Fans leaving the Hump may have been disappointed with the outcome, but they can't deny their team's improvement in 2015.
Mississippi State is 3-4 against major conference opponents since Jan. 1. I.J. Ready has become a legitimate offensive threat, scoring double figures on six of the seven games. He's been even better in clutch situations, burying late 3-pointers against Texas A&M, Vanderbilt and Auburn.
Ready continued his steady play Saturday with 12 points and three assists. He also shut down Georgia's J.J. Frazier the final six minutes of the game. (That was big, considering Frazier was having the hot hand earlier and finishing with a career-high 37 points).
Junior guard Craig Sword showed that the back surgery that limited him during December is no longer an issue. He finished with a reverse layup after a steal. He took the foul, finished the bucket and made the free throw.
There's also been growth in the front court. Roquez Johnson followed Gavin Ware's 16-point, 17-rebound performance against Auburn with a 25 and 12 outing versus Georgia. Ware hauled in 13 rebounds but only scored four points against Georgia.
"I think anybody can see that's watched this team from the beginning to the end, that we're playing our best basketball," Ray said. "That's what you want to see. You want to see your team improving throughout the season."
That wasn't always the case.
The program plummeted in Year 3 under Ray after a 5-0 start. It then lost nine of its next 11 games to increase a losing streak on the road to 22 games and within the conference to 16 games.
The Bulldogs bottomed out in December with three losses to mid-major teams, including two at home by 14 and 19 points.
Unlike Saturday, those losses didn't include a packed student section and mostly filled the lower bowl at Humphrey Coliseum.
Confidence within Mississippi State's fans seems to be building. Saturday's loss isn't expected to change that.
"I know that it was a loss, a big loss," Johnson said. "We were right there. We just didn't finish."

I think it was a sign that our fan-base is pretty hungry for some good basketball, and they will be back in large numbers when we do become competitive. I think that we have forgotten how fricking loud The Hump can get when the fans are into the game.

I think that a good home crowd definitely effects how our team performs. I think it effects team performance no matter the sport really.
I understand that not all people agree with me about that though.

I disagree with the statement that "Junior guard Craig Sword showed that the back surgery that limited him during December is no longer an issue."
He is without doubt much better but now he is getting to the rim but still not able to finish like he has done in the past. Late in the game Saturday there were several trips where he got to the basket but missed point blank shots because he is still not sure of himself physically. If he had been able to make those we probably win.

I do also, to an extent. He did finish a couple trips to the rim, but also missed a couple.
You can just finally tell he's recovering and close to where he used to be rather than it being blatantly obvious he's still injured.

I wasn't able to watch on Saturday. Sounded like Ray could have done better with slowing down Frazier. What did y'all see?

Frazier making everything he tossed up wasn't part of Ray's game plan. Looked like we were determined to stop them on the inside, and the game plan was working until Frazier started hitting everything he looked at. JJ is a pretty good player, but he was nothing outstanding coming into the game. He just got ultra-hot.
Some times you just have to tip your hat to your opponent. The guy was 12 of 14 for the game, 7 of 7 from the 3-pt line, and 6 of 8 FTs. He was a single-digit scorer. You just don't plan for that happening.

I whole heartedly agree. It's called a home advantage for a reason. If everyone were going nuts the entire game, like we had in many football games this year, then we'd be very hard to beat at home.
I think the large portion of alumni (old farts) need to realize that sporting events are not for the timid. If you aren't comfortable standing up and going nuts then there are better things for you to participate in.

That 2012 Kentucky game was crazy

The Kentucky game with Demarcus Cousins was one of the loudest basketball games I have ever been to.

I remember wanting to throw my water bottle too.

If only it had actually knocked one of those mother frickers out. It would have been glorious. The refs fricking sucked in that game. Honestly took that game from us.
I skipped three classes that day to stand out in sub freezing temperatures to get into that game.

I did a lot of things during that game that I'm not proud of, but it was fun.
I was sitting just a row or two up at the end of Kentucky's bench. I can remember hurling pennies at their players while the starting lineups were being called out, and I had a pretty good conversation with Cousins via mouthing words and making hand gestures.

Let me make it clear that I'm not the one that threw the water bottle, although it would have been extremely gratifying. Mine would have been an empty bottle of Canadian Club

I think croomdawggie threw a bottle on the floor towards the end of the game, but I'm not positive.

One of my really good friends claims to have thrown the water bottle from the upper area. I wasn't there so no way substantiate said claims.

After watching/stomaching/torturing myself watching the game last night, I kept thinking that this is easily some of the worst basketball I've watched in ever.
It's sad to watch and I'm ashamed to say I witnessed it. Not b/c it was against ole mis, but b/c that is some bad basketball being played.

It was really bad. We look like kids in a street court, not playing basketball so much as just jumping around and reacting.
