These new students have no idea yet how good they're going to have it, compared to the rest of us who lived in the.....

Here are some of the new buildings artist renditions, maps and layouts of the approved projects

This wasn't the link I am looking for, but it talks more about the connection of the campus to the river.

quote:

COLUMBIA, SC — The transformation of Greene Street in Columbia’s Vista into a narrow, tree-lined thoroughfare linking USC to the riverfront could begin in March.

The revamped Greene Street is designed to be the heart of a new campus for the University of South Carolina, complete with a landmark plaza across from the entrance to the Colonial Life Arena.

The project, nearly a decade in the planning, is the first major construction to break ground using Richland County’s penny-on-the-dollar sales tax for transportation improvements.

The new Greene Street corridor is expected to provide a seamless extension of the university into what are now industrial areas in the Vista, where land has remained undeveloped despite being within view of the state capitol.

Ahhhhh ... that brings back memories!

I remember when they were built, my oldest brother was in school then and worked on them over the summers. Baker, Burney, Douglas, LaBorde (home to the horny LaBordes), Snowden. So that had to be around '61-'64 or so.

By the time I got there they were already well-abused. A buddy of mine and I climbed Burney one night, from the outside, just to watch these two gals we knew on the third floor south corner inside the courtyard ... go-down on each other, live. We were drunker than cooter brown ... but they cut the lights on and gave us a good show. It was maybe the first year for the girl dorms - probably my Jr year if I remember correctly ... having the girls right there among us was like a kid in a candy store back in those days.

All buildings ended-up co-ed eventually, right?

I think they may have went through a name change. When I went there they were Douglas, Snowden, LaBorde and Moore. Laborde and Moore were co-ed. I was in Moore, I had a FANTASTIC time. I coudn't figure why some of the guys I knew requested to live in Snowden or Douglas, knowing fully well that Laborde and Moore were Co-Ed. It was just sooo easy to walk upstairs, hell, they had an elevator even.

I lived in Moore in '92, just a floor down from Hootie and the gang's old spot a few years before me. When I was there Douglas, Moore, LaBorde and Snowden were all male and Burney and Baker were all female. I fondly remember sneaking onto the roof of Moore my junior year '94 and firing water balloons from a balloon launcher onto the old quad.

When they demolished the honeycombs didn't they sell pieces of the lattice brick? I bet you could find all kinds of things if you sent them to a lab...

OMG, those things are HIDEOUS

I was a freshman in fall 2008, so the last honeycomb tower was torn down about 5 years prior to me arriving on campus. They built the new Honors College during my freshmen year and they have an exhibit with a piece of the lattice brick in the lobby.

All of this development between the Assembly and the river was supposed to start 10 years ago, some of it kicked off (Strom, Discovery/Horizon buildings) but then the recession happened. When it's all said and done, it's really gonna be quite amazing how much change is going to happen in that area between assembly and the river over the next 10 or so years..

Oh yeah, no doubt. The entire Vista district is going to undergo a complete transformation.

I'm actually proud of Columbia - thanks to USC, it's finally happening for Columbia. Even the new minor league ball park over on the old Bull Street property is going to help to drastically change things.
