her goal was an extreme emphasis on academics at Mizzou at the cost of the athletics program.

Read in a few books how athletes that couldn't get into Mizzou academically went on and played for NU and OU. It'd be nice if schools had the same academic standards across the board, but some pull strings to get athletes in. Imagine if Mizzou got some of those athletes in the 70's-80's.

Shitty thread title is shitty.

Also, 1960 football and we are going to win the Wrestling NC this year!

Again, not an excuse I like to pull but this is factually correct.

We lost a lot of football players to OU and NU in that era. You had Mizzou on one hand trying to be an academic powerhouse by upping admissions standards and strictly sticking to them, and on the other hand you had OU and NU who were notorious for taking players well below even their own academic requirements just for those kids to play football.

Personally, I wish Mizzou would have played that game as well as even in the modern day. There's a reason Mizzou football has never been on probation, and it's the same reason we haven't won a conference title in 45 years.

College athletics is a dirty business. You've got to play "the game" if you want to win, otherwise you're at a major disadvantage.

Very true.

Don't mean to derail the thread, but you reminded me of a good book about the U of Chicago's football program.

A.A. Stagg tried to "play the game" in the late 1920s to keep up with the rest of the Big Ten, which pissed off the administration. They were afraid being known as just a "football school" again, so Stagg was forced out with some BS age rule.

Football was dropped within a decade, the other sports suffered and the school finally withdrew from the Big Ten.

I'm glad the academic emphasis thing didn't work out for Mizzou like that.

University doesn't claim it nor were they voted as such by any publications (caveat below) but I think we should claim it.

After going 9-0, we lost the final game of the season to kansas. However, they openly and knowingly used an ineligible player, Bert Coan. As a result, the Big 8 forfeited their win and awarded it to Mizzou, making us 10-0. However, this was when the press voted on games following the conclusion of conference play, and as such, had already voted before we were awarded the victory.

In bowl season:
#1 Minnessota lost their bowl game to finish 8-2
#2 Ole Miss beat Rice to finish 10-0-1
#3 Iowa did not play in a bowl and finished 8-1
#4 Navy lost their bowl game to Missouri to finish 9-2
#5 Missouri won their bowl game against Navy to finish 11-0

I recognize that it's a somewhat of a stretch, but I truly think Mizzou has a legitimate claim to the 1960 championship. In the record books, we finished 11-0...the only team to win every game they played. There are dozens of claimed NC's that are less legitimate than ours from those times, which is why I claim it personally.

That one is facetious

I only base it upon this, but I don't seriously consider that one as I do 1960.

That being said, although I believe Mizzou should claim 1960, since they don't I would still answer "0" if someone asked me how many national championships Mizzou football has. I'd consider thinking otherwise if they actually claimed it, but oh well. I'm used to all of my teams being mediocre.

Missouri was awarded the national championship by the polling system in 1960.

The school doesn't claim it, but I do.

We don't need posts like this. Especially from our fanbase.

I got no problem with Mizzou at all. I admire what they've done since joining the SEC, actually.

Much appreciated my friend. Always nice to hear this as a break from "you don't belong here you fricking yankees/Mizzou is pathetic/etc. etc.". We obviously aren't elite but we do what we can with what we have.

Yeah. Because Maryland and Rutgers were such superior additions.

Not as much as we are. Mizzou is a good fit here. And hey, that 1960 title seems pretty legit to me all things considered. It is hard to argue with unbeaten after all.
