Why did this happen to SEC basketball?

When I was a kid Kentucky was an elite, championship caliber program.

LSU had NBA talent and would make deep tourney runs.

Alabama was also loaded with future NBA stars and was a fixture in the top 10-15 in the rankings.

You had Arkansas as a conference new comer being one of the best programs in the country.

Now it's just Kentucky and 13 shades of embarrassing.

LSU ran oft the best HC in their history then had another good coach leave them to take the TCU job.

Alabama fired their best HC in their history and the 2nd best after he was caught banging his secretary.

Arkansas made a couple bad hires before getting it right.

Bad coaching, kids opting for baseball and football instead of basketball, AAU, lots of factors

Maybe football. But I don't think anyone with a potential future in basketball is choosing baseball over basketball.

Anyone with "potential" in baseball does not generally play college ball. Horrible comparison

I know that. I never mentioned college in my post.

Is this the first season of SEC basketball you've watched since 1995?

I think the coaching changes happened. Rick Pitino left Kentucky, Nolan Richardson left Arky, Wimp Sanderson (sp?) left Bama, etc. Conference strength also goes in cycles. Look at Big 10 football.

I think the SEC will be back soon though. UK and Florida have great programs. Arky and Alabama are on the verge of being good. LSU has a program changing recruiting class coming in. Auburn just hired a coach who can turn us into a yearly tourney team.

Hmm, interesting. What about his post-LSU record makes him a "good" coach?

White and Hispanic males, statistically speaking.

He had TCU ranked this season.

LSU hasn't been ranked since he was the HC there.

Not a coincidence.

Yea. But the notion that those kids would have been good enough to make SEC basketball better is laughable.

It is.

It comes down to coaching, not just in the SEC.

The south has had tremendously athletic basketball players, then and now.

However, thanks the things like the AAU and HS coaches getting by from their raw athleticism alone has led to being nothing more than athletes.

College coaches are having to teach these guys how to play the game, while in college. Before 2000ish they knew how to play before getting to college.

The big10 hasn't rose to prominence in basketball from athleticism, it isnt from "genius" coaching either, its from having an outstanding recruiting pool of players who are fundamentally sound with high basketball IQs.

And how many conference games has he won since he's left?
