My kid's school is in the top 5 in three of the categories.

They did away with the graduation exam a few years ago to make room for this. Makes you wonder how so many kids were graduating high school before this, with only the graduation exam. They were studying just for the test, that's how. And if you qualify for a disability, you were only having to pass the math and reading, and one other portion (out of 5 I think), to get a degree.

Not sure how this all holds up now when it comes to state takeovers. If you make a 0% in math, what repercussions are there for the school system and how long do they have to improve scores?

Oh no, it's very true. The looks and location are very deceiving.

Those math numbers are down right sad. Almost makes me want to get into teaching high school math.

Go right ahead and then you'll end up in a poor performing school and realize it's not easy and quit like most of the people I see who try and teach after being in the "real world". I've seen teachers leave crying after one week. Hell, we had a lady two years ago who quit after the first day. She sent an email to the principal at 2 am saying this was not for her.

All those years of teaching have started to wear your wife down.

She's only been teaching for 3 years.

For now, she still loves it.

It's okay. I grew up in Florida and these things aren't a problem.

Not really, though. Jacksonville's school system sucks. My alma mater kicks arse, though. Ranked #12th in the country academically, although we haven't won a football game since 2012.

Most tenth graders haven't had all of the math yet that is tested on the ACT until halfway through their eleventh grade year, so there's that to think about, too.

My high school freshman at Vestavia High School just took the ACT at 14 without having taken geometry. He scored a 24 on the math section. The school placed him in algebra this year. We had to fight them to get them to accept a summer geometry program from another school (Vestavia doesn't offer summer geometry).

Most of this stuff goes back to the parents and not the school.

My old school system did relatively alright I guess?

English 74.36%
Math 35.62%
Science 42.74%

Probably better scores than when I was there.

No, that isn't 'good'.

Is it better than what a lot of schools did. Certainly.

We need to accept the fact that we need shite shovelers in this world too. Close the border so Mexico's lower class don't take the shite shoveling jobs from our lower class.

This isn't an education problem.

Question:

How do the Alabama colleges fill enrollment every year from such a limited pool of qualified applicants?

These are scores from 10th grade...so hopefully by the time they finished 12th..they have learned a bit more. But I would guess a handful of them are in remedial classes in a college somewhere.
