This is positionally or statistically, not program wise, please do not say "we need better recruits", I'm looking for genuine opinions and insight. Multiple answers for each is fine with me.
What are we doing right that is propelling us to the top of college football? And what needs to change and/or improve so that we do not get dragged down instead?

The right stuff:
Dedication to the run game was nice to see. The ability to change things up based on personal is extremely important, wasn't sure if Richt/Bobo would ever pound the rock 60+% of the time, came away impressed with the approach. Will BS improve on that or hold the course? I hope so.
Offensive line play was the best it's been in almost 10 years, I'm going to optimistic and say that it didn't leave with Friend. Will the line play success continue if we get back to more of a balanced attack? As long as guys play with the nasty streak and stay smart good things will continue to happen.
I think Tony Ball is very underrated outside of Athens, John Lilly also. Bmac is very impressive all around,
The entire attitude of the Defense is vital to continued improvement, as long as Pruitt is here I only see us getting better. Tackling in space was greatly improved. Corner blitz was intrigal part of our pressure packages. Love Coach Red Bull!
Special teams solid to great all year, minus some calls/coverages, I think it was a HUGE improvement exactly where is was needed.

The winds of change:
Would like to see FB's in the game more, Hicks is a talent I would hate to see go to waste.
More traditional TE play, of course personal will play a big part in this, want to see more chips on DE's, 5-10 yard curls or outs.
More pressure from front 4-5, don't want to have to blitz just to get QB's feet moving.
Strength & conditioning, hopefully that is fixed with new Head S&C coach and extra hires. Kinda program wise issue, sorry.

Overall, I'm impressed that a Head Coach this deep into his tenure can make this many tangible positive advancements, and not just pay lip service to them as we have seen before. Glad to see the donars tightened the purse strings on McGarity, yall and Richt are to thank for the many improvements we are seeing implemented post-haste.

I agree with everything you typed except your thoughts on Hicks. After a stellar freshman campaign I think he's regressed into our second /third best option at fullback. I know he cross trained at TE but his play this season was waaaay less than stellar.

Personally I think Pruitt's influence on recruiting philosophy and S&C are HUGE steps in the right direction. Add a Bobo for Shotty trade and I think we're making more progress.

Big picture, UGA finally shows they care about winning and are trying to improve.

What must change?
The annual meltdown games have to stop- hopefully Pruitt/ Shotty will help here.

Biggest area of change I see is culture:
Jimma Williamson- he ain't gonna change. Wonder how many Bama/ AU kids get arrested for "pot residue"?

Compliance- we've got to stop the self-inflicted wounds. If you have the most stringent punishment in the conference, don't line they boys up for a pi$$ test the day they return from Spring Break...that's just stupid.

When the NCAA comes around, don't take the role of assistant prosecuter. Try a defense strategy for a change. Seems to work well for AU, UT, TA&M, etc.

My $.02

Hicks

I'll take Maxey. He was solid as a true freshman. Not as good with the ball as Hicks but does everyhting else a FB is supposed to do waaaaay better.

I'd like to see an increased emphasis on OL play. I'm running the risk of slipping into broken record mode on here, but I want to recruit at OL like we do at QB/RB. If we develop a "reload, never replace" mentality for the offensive line while continuing to do so at the skill positions, then the sky's the limit as to our offensive production.

I like Pruitt's challenge to take what was a liability on defense when he was given the keys to the D (the secondary), and he's making it a strength. I love to see a DB fly into the frame while watching a game on TV and see him come down with the ball.

Well I'm retarded. I thought he was a freshman last year.

Well it was his first time to ever play so I can understand your thinking. He was great for us last year, but really only played because of Merritt's concussions. I agree with your statement about Maxey being better than Hicks from a blocking standpoint though.

Thankfully, when you have RBs like ours, all you really need a FB for is competent blocking. (And boneheaded ST play, apparently).

I'm sorry but if winning the SEC and then a playoff game against a top 5 team and then a national championship game is the definition of success, it comes down to recruiting.

Your players have to be better, or at least as good as, those 3 other badass teams you are going to have to beat, on the road, consecutively.

Talking about the police or whether or not Lilly is a good tight ends coach is really just nibbling around the edges.

As long as we are recruiting classes that are somewhere in the top 10 but still behind 2 or 3 other SEC teams plus FSU and Oh St, that's where we are probably going to continue finishing out football seasons.

Top 2-3 recruiting classes like Oregon? Talent is not UGA's problem Deeprig.

You mean Oregon with the Heisman winner, Oregon who won their conference, and then beat the shite out of FSU in the playoff and got to play in the national championship game?

ETA I see what you are saying, they've been recruiting in the teens. So why do they keep being good? Well they run a fancy system and play in weak conference, and I guess there's exceptions to every rule or trend.

Yes, them. What was their recruiting class rank for the last 4 years?? Higher or lower than FSU?

Our recruiting is fine.

What do Alabama, FSU, and Ohio State have in common?

Other than the fact they've all won NC's in the last 3 years.

I get so fricking sick of "recruit better" complaints without innovative ideas being suggested. We recruit as well as most any top 10 team. The problem is the coaches fail to bring them up to top level production on the field.
Administration also puts stringent conditions as far as grades and personal performance that other schools don't have. I would rather have UGas standards and fall short of a natty than be like Auburn and Florida State.
If all you want is titles then for Gods sake go support another team.

Ehhh

I don't know about that. We typically haul in a top 10 class every year, which on the surface IS fine. I mean who wouldn't like that?

The problem lies in the fact that our biggest competition is reeling in top 2 and 3 classes. That stretch from the mid-aughts through about 2012 or so, florida/bama/lsu were all bringing in top 5 classes every.single.year. Hell bama has had THE #1 class like 6 or 7 years that saban has been there. That is insane!

Our coaching staff is very, very good. But it's probably not elite. With that in mind, if we want to become elite as a team/program, ie win national titles, we better start recruiting elitely, which we haven't done. This class could do a good job of turnign that.

And over that time period our OL recruiting hasn't come close to matching some of those schools. Same with DL. And that has been a huge difference.

Shat, we woulda beat Bama and FSU with Mason at QB and the best player in college football injured. tOSU woulda frog stomped us.

Again, talent is not our problem.
