Here are Arkansas' stats since their last last Final Four trip in 1995.

Overall Record : 348-257 (58%)
SEC Record : 145-168 (46%)
NCAA Apperances : 8 (0 since 2008, 3 since 2002)
1 Sweet 16
0 Elite 8s
0 Final 4s
0 SEC Championships
1 SEC Tournament Championships

This is not some sort of troll thread (I have no desire or reason to troll Arkansas), but a thread to ask Arkansas people how they see themselves as a program? Do you guys consider the last 20 years as a journey through the desert with bad decisions that can/have been rectified? Or do you think that this is just kind of who you are now, a solid program but not a Top 15-20 type program?

You guys are clearly as talented and good as you have been since the mid-90's right now, so I would assume you feel like things are back in place.

Could be, I guess, but more so because it made me think and I became curious.

Arkie has a great round ball tradition for those that don't know. Arky has made the Final Four six times which I believe is 2nd to only UK in the SEC. I'm not sure what the issues are right now because even though they are winning, Arkie still doesn't look good. With that being said, they have always had the tools for a successful program. Access to Missouri, Kansas and the Memphis areas have always enabled them to get great players. They will be back strong eventually. That Nolan thingy set that program back worse than people know.

hmm, i think historically we're probably in the 20's somewhere still but i know that's not your question.

basketball as a whole to me is not what it used to be. and i don't think that's just me getting older and cranky, i think if you watch a game from 20 years ago and compare to today that today is just not as good, imo- or not as good in a team play way for sure.

so, i'm still not answering your question really but we're definitely not where we were and i'm getting skeptical of if we'll ever be there again. we only have one natty but we were a force to be dealt with almost every year for a few decades minimum. i hope to get back there but no we are not or haven't been. is mike the answer? i don't know that either so i leave this post with not really providing anything but i don't knows.

I guess my question is do you see the last 20 years as an aberration or the new normal?

A response thread to just one post....

Sad man, so sad

And to answer your question....Arkansas is around a top 15 program all time, even with only the small achievements since 2000

I wouldn't think so, I think it's probably somewhere inbetween. Arkansas has been up and down this year but this is certainly your best team in a while and almost a lock to make the NCAA. I would think Anderson's teams will be like this more than they won't.

Cannot underestimate the damage done by the Nolan fiasco. Nolan quit recruiting and lost his passion for the job in a battle of egos with Broyles. We go from winning the NC to a pair of first round exits within 6 years. Bad hires followed.

I do think we will return to the top tier program we were. Not convinced MA is the man to do that, however.

I used to consider us a top program. I don't think we can justify saying that right now. I think we are good, not great. Fan support is not what it used to be. I think the Mike Anderson hire, while I liked it and support him was us trying to go back to the Nolan era and I don't know if that style can win titles anymore. We have the resources to be elite but recruiting has been a major letdown for the most part the past 10+ years. we had a few busts and a few misses on players that could have been impact players.

I think we can get back to a high level but I'm not sure we are focused on that at the top if that makes any sense at all.

I like this team this year, but we have some glaring weaknesses and that scares me a lot.

Good stuff, seems like a pretty reasonable response.

Arkansas should be a perennial top 25/tournament team and reach at least the sweet 16 once every 4/5 years. We obviously aren't at that level right now.

I agree with piggilicious. I find our team almost unwatchable from a team-game perspective, regardless as to whether we're doing better this year relative to recent memory. I was a basketball nut/gym rat growing up and played a lot of hoops in my formative years - and LOVED Arkansas hoops - i can vividly recall days of old w/ Eddie Sutton and Nolan, especially when thing really got rolling in late 80s-early 90s. This...what we are doing now - doesnt come close to any of the glory years.

We're terrible and have many average and forgettable players that come thru our program on a yearly basis it seems. I am utterly unimpressed with Bobby Portis - he's 6'10" and has improved his jumper and overall offensive game, but if he's a lotto pick then my impression of what's a lottery pick is way off. He's got cinder blocks for feet and doesn't dominate the paint at all.

Anyway, i digress. I think we're a middling program with the resources to be great but we're a long way from it. We'll probably make the NCAA tourney and get sent somewhere far away and lose to an inferior team in the first round because we're undisciplined and choke on the road.

This style we play doesnt at all resemble the real 40 mins of hell where i once saw a half time score of Arkansas vs Loyola Marymount at 76-72, I do not think MA is the answer but my mind could be changed if we get Malik Monk and a couple others and really make a splash and gain some momentum.

Otherwise, we'll just be an ok program which in the SEC is in the top quartile but not worth a shite in most other power conferences.
