From Brice:

I made clear we as a staff have talked to various people in multiple places and that DeBord has a strong reputation.

He had chosen to admin those sports at Michigan rather than on-field coaching at other places b/c he was committed to Michigan and frankly there had been talk at one point he would become the Michigan A.D. until the Brady Hoke era unraveled in a mess.

I understand it seems odd that he's been not on the field, and that makes it difficult from a perception standpoint. But I also think if DeBord and other people involved in the search or calling UT on his behalf step forward publicly, many will be willing to view it with a more open-minded approach.

Again, both Hubbs and I talked to different people this evening, as did Austin, Paul and others, and folks who had been close-minded about DeBord no longer are. Additionally, perhaps UT will allow Dobbs to speak if it elects to hire DeBord and Dobbs can share what he told multiple people on campus tonight.

I wish they'd tell us what led to the change of mind for those who were close-minded about it.

"Hey we need you guys to get behind us..."

Seriously, this guy has been fired/resigned from every coaching position he has held.

If we hire him, I will fricking melt so hard. frick that loser.

This may help the melt. The post is from another board and you can see exactly what he's saying in the youtube link which shows basically our offense beating an Urban Meyer coached Florida.

I asked him what he knew about Mike DeBord, I told him Tennessee was looking at him in regards to OC. I made the statement that I didn’t see how the style of play was a good fit for CBJ. He went on to say it would actually be a good fit, I asked how do you figure? He went on to tell me Lloyd Carr dictated what type of offensive scheme to run, and DeBord was simply following along.

Here is where our conversation got interesting, he said in the month leading up to the Capital One Bowl against Florida, DeBord approached Lloyd Carr explaining their current offense wasn’t a good matchup against Florida and recommended they open it up as he knew how to attack Florida in space. Reluctantly Carr agreed, they spent a month of practice working on the spread getting ready for the game. My brother in law keeps up with and watches Tennessee football also because my sister is a Tennessee alum. He said, when you have time go watch the Capital One Bowl, it’s the same offense Butch runs.

That day Michigan won, and put 41 points up against Florida and had their D tripping over themselves. Now I’m not saying this is proof he is the “man” but after watching this I can certainly see why Butch is talking to him. After that game Lloyd Carr retired, Rich Rod was hired and DeBord took a position as O Line coach with Seattle.

I, for the record, would be pretty disappointed with the Debord hire... But I don't know shite, and I know that I don't know shite, so I'll wait till football season before I melt.

If he is actually the guy.

I feel like we could do better but I'm not sure Hart is willing to pay the piper yet. A top name would require raising all staff salaries or cause MAJOR friction. And Norvell, for one, said he was interested but also said he wouldn't leave for less than 7 figures. Football still has to make more money, which is unfortunate, especially since Hart is one notorious tightwad but the situation is getting better.

That said, I don't think DeBord is bad hire just be meh but I think 'meh' is his bottom whereas his ceiling is higher. BUT I feel we'd be ok with him or most anyone else willing to stick to the system we have (with only a few modification) for that matter. IOW, I see know need to melt.

I'm ok with whoever we hire on the hotboard list and maybe a few others. There's just no garauntess in Football when a coach of any sort changes jobs.

According to veterans of this beat with better sources than I have -- including @JimmyHyams and @wesrucker247 -- Matt Canada is a legit candidate in Tennessee's OC search. I covered Canada when he was Bill Lynch's offensive coordinator at Indiana.

I would not be opposed to this from what I can tell he did a great job at NC State this year.

I like him; probably my favorite name that has come up in this search. He turned down Vandy and, allegedly, Ohio State.

The Vandy rejection doesn't worry me about chances of landing him. The OSU rejection does.

He would be a strong hire IMO

#9 Scoring Offense
#14 Total Offense
#24 Passing Offense with just shy of 4k yards on the season
#31 Rushing Offense with just shy of 3k yards on the season

He is a west coast guy coaching at his alma mater...seems like a tough pull, but money has been known to talk.

Vandy supposedly offered him $600k (~2x his current salary) and he said no thanks.

Anyone else think we will find out who the new OC is after NSD? I think it will be Debord, and it will be announced next Thursday morning.
