My Chrysler has been totaled and I have no idea where to start.
My commute isn't far (about 10 minutes if I miss the morning freight train) so mpg Is not the MAIN concern, but I do take trips do visit family in upstate SC about once a month. I know I don't want:
1. Anything German- High maintenance costs as they age.
2. Anything Japanese. I hate the the look of the new Camry and Accord.
Was thinking about an '13 ATS but the base engine seems gutless (~200hp is something I'd expect in a Focus not a former 40k "luxry" sedan). Anybody know anything/drive a Lacrosse ('11+)?

Ford Fusion or Taurus, since you are pretty much limiting yourself to domestic manufacturers.

Hyundai and Kia have been pumping out some quality product lately. I'd at least go test drive the Sonata and Optima.
And before someone ignorantly comes in and tries to state they're Japanese manufacturers, you're wrong.

Well not completely. Some people have suggested Kia but no one can tell me what the maintenance is like on them.
Was not thinking about those. Will check them out.
I really wanted a Mustang but it doesn't make much sense to get one since I would get raped by insurance alone.

I'm sure the maintenance costs that go with that align perfectly with what the OP stated he was looking for

Bitch, I live in Black Mountain. Clearly, my opinions are of grave importance.

My girlfriend has an ATS. I love driving it. It's got more power than you would think.

My bro had a rental Chevy Cruze and it was actually pretty nice. Plus it got pretty good mpg.
I have no clue how much they cost or mx issues, etc.

Go test drive a Sonata. I bought one for my commute and love it.

In the past couple years before I got my newest car, I drove a few rentals (all 2014) when traveling. I wasn't a big fan of the Cruz. I didn't feel like it handled as well as the others I drove (my typical trip is about 7 hours).
My favorites that I drove were a Ford Focus and Toyota Corolla. If I had a little bigger budget when I was car shopping this time I would've bought a 2014 Corolla. It had insanely good gas mileage, is a good looking car, handled the best out of the bunch (the Focus was right behind), and that was with the minimal amenities you get on a rental. And that's coming from someone who has driven Fords all her life and now owns a a Chevy.

I recently wrecked my mustang and now drive a focus. I hated it at first but for the gas mileage it's great, and it' drives better than I thought it would.

I have a 2012 Taurus SEL and really like it. Great Car. Very highly rated both in terms of service life and in safety. 3.6L v8 will go.
I originally looked at a whole host of Jap cars after 10 years of owning a Toyota Avalon. Wound up unexpectedly really liking the Fusion, but decided it was too small. Wanted a big car, so went Taurus. Sharp looking car as well.

My grandma drive a LaCrosse. It's a nice car, and has surprising power. In that class though, I really like the look of the Fusion. Never driven one though.

Coworker's dad is a mechanic and recommended a Hyundai and said Kias are a wildcard but hasn't seen anything bad about their new models
You can buy an Optima or Sonata base for 18-20k with a 10 year 100k Mile warranty (5yr 60 bumper2bump)
Can't beat that
