Absolutely crushed Cornell last weekend in a Top 10 matchup. Numbers are a bit deceiving.

Their #3 ranked 125 missed weight and bumped up to 133, which was huge.

125-Waters-wins by Forfeit +6 Mizzou 6-0
133-Synon upsets #3 Garrett +3 Mizzou 9-0. Huge match which I was not expecting Synon to win. May be the starter from here on if he wrestles this well.
141-Mayes-Beat a backup. +4 Mizzou 13-0
149- Houdashelt does his thing +4 Mizzou 17-0
157-#10 Lavalle loses to #9 Cornell guy. Wasn't ever in the match. +3 Cornell 17-3
165- England loses to #11 ranked Cornell. Still laboring after cutting down to 165, hopefully he can get it under control and rebound. +3 Cornell 17-6
174-Eblen looking good after his cutting down to 174 and dominated +3 Mizzou 20-6
184- Miklus wrestles very tough against #1 ranked guy but comes up short. +3 Cornell 20-9
197-J'Den whoops another ranked opponent +4 Mizzou 24-9
285-Mellon bouncing back nicely. +3 Mizzou 27-9

Final Score 27-9

This weekend is big as well. Dual vs Central Michigan on Saturday at Hearnes @ Noon. Go Watch the Wrasslers whoop some directional michigan bootay before the bouncy ball tigers beat the voluntears!

If you miss saturday, go Sunday vs NC State, at Hearnes @ 1pm

Win by forfeit - 6 points
Win by pin- 6 points
win by technical fall (up by 15, match ends. basically a mercy rule) - 5 points
Win by major decision (8-14 point margin of victory) - 4 points
Win by decision (1-7 point victory) - 3 points
Injury Default - depends on how the injury happened. If opponent does something illegal to injure you and you cannot continue, you win. If it is purely accidental and you can't continue, they win. Injury defaults are all or nothing. The score up to that point does not matter - 6 points.

*Tournament scoring is different ie. NCAA tournament.

England v. Rhoskopf was an exciting match-up. Thought England was going to win it late for a sec.

And we basically kicked NC State's arse.

You guys look very good this year. Do you think a national title run is in the offing?

Good question and I was gonna ask a similar question to the guys that really follow wrestling. I know there's still a ways to go, but who do y'all think qualify or if it's easier, who doesn't qualify?

My take is there's a chance. We'll certainly have a number of guys who have a legitimate shot at individual national titles. I think the first key will be getting as many guys as possible to qualify so that we have a chance at points in each weight division. From there, if we can get a few guys to get hot at the right time and wrestle their best, there's an outside chance.

I had the chance to watch Iowa Friday...and I think the NCAA's are a race for 2nd. The Hawkeyes are stacked. But there is always a chance.

Have to get Lavalle, England, Mellon wrestling their best to even have a chance.

5th, how many guys do you think qualify for the NCAA's? All of them? Or do we miss out on any certain weight class?

I would say that Waters, J'den, and Houdashelt are 99% going to AA, with legit shots at titles.

I see Mayes, Eblen, Miklus, and Mellon definitely qualifying... and needing good to great tournaments to AA.

If Synon keeps wrestling the way he has the past few weeks he has an excellent chance to qualify. Not sure if Manley will make it back in the lineup.

England and Lavalle will definitely need to pick up some wins, and likely put on a strong showing at the MAC tournament.

So I would say we have 7 basically in...with 3 who still need to get some wins, or get an automatic berth by performing at the MAC tourney.

The way wrestling works, the conference (MAC) will get so many automatic qualifying spots at each weight, but guaranteed at least one. So maybe there are 5 automatic spots for 125...so finishing top 5 at the MAC tournament would get you an automatic berth...but maybe 133 only has 3 automatic spots...so top 5 might not get you in automatically.

For those who don't autoqualify...there is a wildcard system...basically the same as at large bids for basketball.

A big thing in wrestling is what we call "peaking"...wrestling your best. It is a huge portion of the sport to peak in March.

Thanks for the education 5th. Truly. I watched my first 2 Mizzou matches over the weekend and enjoyed them. In fact, I'll be honest, if they're on at the same time, I'm probably watching wrestling over basketball.

My brother wrestled in college a bit so I'm a little bit familiar but they dropped their program before he got really involved.

It's amazing how much of it is as much a chess match as it is who is bigger and stronger than who. Having said that, J'den is a monster.

Is it this year that the NCAA's are in STL? If so, I might try to go. I think 7 in with a couple/few that have a legit shot is pretty solid. I imagine Iowa gets 10 in. Fair to say?

Like I said, only watched 2 matches but first impressions:

Wasn't really impressed with Lavalle. It might just be his style but he seems to run out of gas.

England can look dominating or can completely beatable. If he can tap into that dominating side and consistently bring that, he could be one to surprise IMO(and I don't mean win a title by that, just surprise).

Don't recall much of Synon either way.

Mayes seemed like the clearly better wrestler in both matches but seemed to take it for granted. If he can find the fire that J'den has, he can be unbeatable at his weight.

Miklus seems sound. Nothing dominating. Nothing weak. Just steady and sound.

Mellon, it might be unfair because he went against a guy with a 40 match win streak, didn't impress me either. He seemed to just quit if he tried something and it didn't work, thereby just giving away points.

Anyways, a first impression from a very amateur observer.

Iowa is always a powerhouse in the college ranks I fear, its like having Bama, USC, and Notre Dame all rolled into one program. Are Mizzou wrestling meets on the SEC Network by any chance? Otherwise I'll have a hard time finding one to watch I fear.

Since it doesn't seem likely the Hogs will get a team anytime soon I might as well cheer on the Northern Aggresso... err... I meant my dear friends to the North.

Also, at the end of the wrestling season I dare a Mizzou fan to announce that they won the SEC East in wrestling just to poke the Rant with a stick. Do it, you know you want too.

I don't think the SEC Network carries any of it.

LINK

That's the link to the wrestling schedule. I was able to watch this weekend for free. Usually there's a charge for Mizzou Network but maybe not for wrestling or maybe it was a promo weekend. I don't know. To watch it, I will click on the Okie State match and look to see if there is a "Watch Now" tab that opens on the right hand side. Huge match up too against Okie State.

That should be a great meet for y'all. I am no expert and even I know that Okla State has a proud tradition in the sport.

It should be tough. I don't know much either but just reading up on them, it seems like it's pretty evenly matched, with maybe a slight lean to Mizzou. If everyone wins that is supposed to win, Mizzou wins a close won. If Mizzou gets a couple of upsets, they could blow them out. I think OSU only wins a close one and that's if they get a couple of upsets.
