I would have drowned. Probably around the 1/2 mile mark

Swimming is fricking exhausting, I can't fathom swimming 9 miles. Guess he didn't have an anchor

It says the boat was on auto pilot when he fell off. So was probably trolling. Stood no chance to catch the boat once he fell, only chance was to swim hard for shore.

9 fricking miles! All the while wondering if a shark was closing in I'm sure

Exactly, It's like the people that go hiking in the mountains and don't take any form of firearm. Do they really think they can outrun a bear?

its a tough swim to be sure. I bet the main issue was hypothermia though.

You will float in salt water. You can also make a PFD from your pants.

Still a gutsy swim.

Without a life preserver and a plan for such possibilities, as well as being hooked up on your boat

Have you personally done this and if so how long have you done this for. I have done it, it is not a long term solution for sure

Not long term. I have done it with my jeans. Only an hour out of curiosity.

I was a swimmer. I have swam 4 miles in the ocean but it was escorted.

The total mind frick of unexpectedly falling off a boat into cold water and having to swim for your life is something I have no experience with. That snafu can't be overestimated.

this isn't that impressive honestly, sure i swam in college and all... but at 13 i was doing >9 miles a day in the summer and x-mas unquestioned. an alleged 9 miles in 10-12 hours works out to over 2 minutes for a single 50m lap in an olympic sized pool. to put that in better perspective i'm adding Eric the Eel at the 2000 olympics watch his last lap... that controlled drowning is twice the "speed" the football player was moving in the water. so basically he was floating.

if you want to claim this was hard because of the water temp... 76-78 is the average water temperature in west palm beach currently. a little cool but not that bad, especially for somebody i'd assume at least has a body fat % triple mine. if needed i can throw up some open water master's swimming results for 10 miles where a 60+ year old lady is doing it well under 5 hours... you know for perspective and shite.

the biggest accomplishment in this feat was not being eaten.

I have 3 boats, 41' Sailboat, 31' inboard power twin and 26' outboard power cat. Never leave the dock without my flotation gear on, nor do I permit anyone else to be on the boat, away from the dock, without a life preserver, just plain common sense.

There are old pilots and bold pilots but there are not OLD BOLD PILOTS

When you were swimming in college, you had trained and trained for hours/days/weeks to swim that far. This guy did it from a flat stop. Let's not puff our chests out.

yeah like i was 13 swimming in college, and that 62 year old lady doesn't stack up too well with an elite athlete such as a former nfl player. without training a single lap in over 15 years and collapsing a lung in that time frame, i could easily make that swim no problem. if you gave me a waterproof case and waterproor matches i could do it while smoking a pack of black and milds. the hardest part would be smoking all 5 black and milds in 6 hours or less.

Eric the eal didn't have to keep going for 8.97 more miles, his pace would have been a LOT slower had he kept going.

Also there was no current, waves, sun to deal with.
