Key Departures: None

Returning Starters: Dennis (Sr.), Penton (Jr.)

In The Mix: Johnson (Sr.), Gibson (Jr.), Cheadle (So.), Wingo (Fr.)

New Additions: Perkins, Warren, Hilton

Another position that should be nothing but stronger next year. I'd bet in many years, Gibson would be Mizzou's best corner. He's 3rd best, tops, on this team. Dennis quickly became my favorite at the position last year, with his combination of coverage, tackling and what seemed to be a little bit of a nasty streak at times. Penton will once again lock down the other side and looks to only get better as well.

Behind the 2 returning starters is still more talent. As mentioned, Gibson, while not as talented as the other two, is still capable, especially when looking at past cornerbacks not named Gaines. Johnson, likewise, can adequately spell people, though if injuries create a situation where a long time replacement is needed, I wouldn't be surprised to see the younger guys fill that need. Cheadle is one of those. He got time at cornerback last year and looks to keep the position one of strength for years to come. And Mizzou still isn't done, with redshirt freshman Wingo. Is it possible, with the depth, that Wingo may be one of those guys to flip to the offensive side at WR?

I haven't paid close enough attention to know where the newcomers predict, and there's always the possibility of some movement within the backfield itself, so I'm including them as both corners and safeties. I haven't watched his film, but some Bama fans think Warren is our best recruit so far...that includes Lock or Strong or Abbington. Hilton and Perkins also seem capable of playing WR and it will be interesting to see where they end up.

Again, cornerback improves next year IMO. And looks to be a position that will remain strong for years to come. I don't know if I ever would have thought that even just several years ago.

Personally I'm a bigger fan of JG1, but agree we've come along way since the Carl Gettis days, that was beyond stressful.

What are the odds that Johnson graduates and transfers. He is clearly the 4th corner this year, and it's possible some of the younger guys pass him.

I wouldn't be upset with that. On the one hand, I guess having a senior back there is nice. But I think that both Cheadle and Wingo may be more talented. Time will tell, but I would like the extra scholarships from somewhere.

Probably one of the more interesting groups.

Some random thoughts. I think Gibson is actually a better athlete and cover guy than Penton, but Penton is a better tackler and more physical.

Wilson is pretty small to be playing the nickel. I know he played there last year, but I wonder if a guy like Sherrils or Ross may be a better fit.

I know Simon is a multi year starter, but I hesitate to see him slide over into Webb's role. I still can't get over a play last year where he met a RB in the hole and literally jumped out of the way like he was scared to tackle him.

I've been a pretty big Penton fan. Gibson may be an overall better coverage guy, but I think Penton does a better job of shedding the blocker and making the tackle on those damn bubble screens. It's nice to have guys that typically could start coming in a splitting snaps.

Obviously I don't know how he'll play on defense, but I became a huge Sherrills fan last year with the way he wasn't afraid to absolutely hit guys on ST.

It will be interesting to see if guys like Rupert and Stribling stick around.

Looks like we have some wheels in the secondary. Excited to see what Odom does with them.

And Dennis ran a 4.38. Something tells me that equates to about a 4.5 or 4.6 if it were timed at a combine.
