Auburn's taking the high road, but Bama just beat them out IMO. They have a long history that says Taylor would have been welcome on the plains.

Love him or hate him, Barrett Sallee is the only one I've seen strongly condemning Saban/Bama for taking on someone charged with domestic violence, assault and theft by deception.

Apparently Gus blocked him from even visiting Auburn. I hate that fricker but respect him for that. I'm all for second chances for people but Taylor had his and he responded by choking out a girl half his size and punching her in the face.

Malzahn said publicly that he wouldn't recruit players with a history of domestic violence. He wouldn't let Taylor visit.

Well, Taylor did talk to Auburn from what I've read. If true, that suggests Malzahn was considering taking him. His statements may well be PR after Taylor showed more interest in Alabama. Even Auburn fans are saying that Auburn lost interest only after some domestic violence issues made news in the NFL, which may well have been a good excuse for Auburn to take the moral high ground in what was a lost cause.
I remember when Urban Meyer made similar statements about domestic violence, until it suited his needs to think otherwise. Malzahn's tolerance of guys like Newton, Marshall, Dyer, says that his ethics are quite flexible depending on the circumstance/need. I've also read about some of their top WR's that got into trouble several times, including one this season, but Gus managed to overlook it.

I hate Gus, but I disagree with you on this. Yes, he has taken players in that have had off the field issues, but domestic violence is a whole different deal than smoking pot or stealing. I don't think he would have ever taken Taylor, but he absolutely would not have considering how prevalent of an issue it has become over the last year.

Well, like I said there was talk on the Auburn boards and elsewhere that he was being considered. Auburn undoubtedly feels a little pressure after getting a bad reputation for taking kids kicked out of other programs, so maybe they did take the high road here. But the history speaks for itself and Malzahn's standards for accepting historical trouble makers are far from pristine.
I'm more than a little skeptical when they people say, yeah we'll take some guys with known character issues, but we have an internal standard that is firm. Especially when the player goes to their more attractive cross state rival. That makes their newly minted stand on domestic violence look self-serving.

I honestly think that Garner wanted him really badly (I believe he recruited him to UGA). I would guess that he was pushing for Taylor, but ultimately that decision lies with the head coach and Malzahn didn't want him.

Actually, the ultimate decision was Taylor's. That much we know for sure. Bama was a big player in his initial recruitment and he may have chosen them over Rodney Garner/Auburn. If domestic violence was such a red line for Malzahn, I doubt the subject over Auburn would have ever come up because Gus would have told Garner absolutely not from the beginning.
