Saw this one earlier today and came away really impressed with the man.

MSU question - do you think he could have turned the Bulldogs into a contender?

Alabama fans - you guys owe him a BIG thank you for beating Coach Shula, thus opening the door for Coach Saban to enter and lead your program,

Probably not, even tho he didn't get a fair shot at doing so.

I believe he was too much of a 3 yards & a cloud of dust type of coach. I'm not sure how he'd embrace spread offensive minded assistants.

Absolutely not.

Other teams fans sure like Croom a lot. He was one of the worst coaches ever to grace the sidelines of an SEC school. He was completely over his head.

For example, we were playing at Georgia one year and in a tight game. Had a chance to pull a monumental upset. He went of it on 4th and 3 at the UGA 40 and got it. 3 plays later it was 4th and 1 at the UGA 30 and he punted.

Also, he lost to Maine and then said they could finish in the top half of the SEC. He also called fans out and dared the AD to fire him.

The 2007 Liberty Bowl season was a perfect storm of having a good defense, Alabama and Auburn being down and Ole Miss being bad. Wes Carroll set all kinds of records as a freshman QB and basically had to ignore the sideline calls to engineer the winning drive in the Liberty Bowl against UCF. He was put in the dog house because of it and ended up transferring to FIU in favor of the midget phenom Tyson Lee.

I think the problem with a Mississippi State type program is not with the head coach but just recruiting in general. The first stringers are good enough for first string. At the higher level schools the second string is good enough to start in most cases. Hard to sell the big picture in Starkeville.

They brought Croom in to help avoid NCAA sanctions, change the culture, and build the talent back up. As soon as he did that, they stabbed him in the back and fired him.

OBReb6 - it was not a troll post, it was a honest question based upon the program I saw today. Link me to the other 10 threads

Jesus you people are stupid. I guarantee you if he was at LSU you would hate him with every fiber you have because of how bad he was. Guy was a terrible coach but a nice man. That's it.

I agree. I liked Coach Croom as a person. Good guy did things the right way, but he was a terrible HC. That offense of his was a joke. I know we didn't have a load of talent, but a junior high coach could have made better decisions with clock management, when to punt or not, etc. That 2007 season was a perfect storm. Every break and bounce went our way and we only went 8-5. I knew it and tried to tell others to no avail. The next year was back to garbage. So, could we have ever won with Croom? Not no, but heck no.

Look, some posters don't want to agree with me, but the best thing to happen to State and Ole Miss recently is the complete demise of the Southern Miss program.

Southern Miss had 15 straight winning seasons and always went to a bowl. MSU and Ole Miss were up and down. USM won their conference and was 5 points away from being a BCS buster before they went South. What was happening in Mississippi was the players that could be used to build decent depth were going to USM and becoming starters, going to bowl games, and they were very close to becoming a Boise State type program before the 0-12 season out of no where.

Now those players that would normally be 2nd/3rd stringers at State and Ole Miss are actually becoming 2nd/3rd stringers at State and Ole Miss rather than All-Conference USA performers at USM.
