first time I've had a real job during the holidays so just trying to find out how common it is for ppl to have to work on NYE. For my job we are working a half day today and another half day on Friday and it was the same schedule as last week.
I don't mind it really it just kind of screws you if you needed to go out of town for family

Then take time off if you need to go out of town.
I am at work as well.

I've been in the professional world almost 20 years and have never had NYE off unless I took a sick/vacation/PTO day. We do close early at my current job, but usually not until around 2 or 3. Closed tomorrow, but back open Friday.

that's the kind of information I was looking for

This is the first NYE I've worked in 20 years. But I'm shutting this bitch down shortly after the mail runs.
God I hope my normal mailman didn't take today off.

I take part of what I said back. I've never worked anywhere where NYE was a paid holiday for the entire company/office. I have had a couple of jobs where I took NYE "off" without using a vacation day. Just depended on the boss and job and how busy we were.

Yea I mean we r in the bond selling business which involves a lot of cold calling and such and we didn't do shite for business on Christmas Eve and won't today either. I don't really understand why we re open bc I know the company looses money on days like today but I guess they've been doing it a lot longer and are a lot smarter than I am

I wish I could assume my employer is smarter than I, but the gubmint just likes to waste money

I've never understood why most businesses don't just shut down from Christmas Eve through New Year's Day. Outside of a handful of industries(retail, healthcare, freight, hospitality/travel, etc) nothing really gets done. I've been playing on the internet almost everyday I've been in the office the past week.

So it's a normal work week for you?

Good point. I should have said playing on the internet is about all I've done. A normal week I actually have work to do, and get it done. Haven't had much work the past week.

If you don't mind me asking what do you do at your bank?
I've been thinking about going to work at a bank for a while and am trying to figure out if it's the smart thing to do

consumer loans
money's not great, but i have no pressure to meet any goals or anything. I've found that I'm much happier if I don't have a stressful job, even if I'm not making bank.
i would say i'm in the minority though, most loan officers have to hustle to get business and meet goals. Depends on the bank.
