It does smell.

That's because tourist muthafrickers come piss on our walls.

There are two smells people seem to be talking about - the piss/beer smell that comes from Bourbon and the Quarter, and the swampy one which pervades most of South LA. Can't really argue with either but I guess I don't notice the first because I rarely go to the FQ and I don't notice the second cause I've lived here all my life.

New Orleans has unique charm, fascinating architecture and the best food in North America.
HOWEVER, as a great fan of the city, the stench in the Quarter is awful and totally unnecessary. Getting rid of the citrus wash (or whatever it was that was implemented after Katrina) was profoundly stupid and the product of the second most recognizable smell from that city: the municipal government.
Those of us who love the city and visit it often should be among the first to agree with Amari and ask our friends there to clean it up.

I've got friends from BR and the north shore that hate New Orleans though, and will avoid it at all costs.

The Northshore and Baton Rouge are closer to some Alabama shithole than New Orleans or the rest of south Louisiana.

The Mandeville/Covington area is the nicest in south Louisiana. It's where all the good New Orleanians migrated to, well there and Houston.

And lol at anyone in any southern state trying to prop their shitholes up over the rest of them. There are shitholes all over the south.

When you people say the quarter only you are full of shite. I work downtown and not in the quarter and it smells like arse except probably for Lafayette park and a little but around superdome. The quarter is a lot worse and really indescribably bad. The other areas just have that nasty swamp smell in general.

I worked for 15 years in the French Quarter. Sure, there was always a percentage of locals in the Quarter, but it was low.

On average, it was 90% tourists droppings or dumping their beers on the ground, pissing on our walls and vomiting their hurricanes. Every block has trash cans, and every bar has a bathroom. They are there for a reason.

Wasn;t talking about the Quarter exclusively. All cities on the Gulf Coast smell due to their locations in a humid, subtropical zone. New Orleans is especially pungent due to it's location BELOW sea level.

All port cities smell. If your city routinely sees barges going in and out of a harbor or up and down a river, it smells. Get over it. It's not a big fricking deal, and you can't do anything about it.

And don't get so uptight when you market a sector of your city as a nonstop bacchanal and people take you at your word and piss on the walls and get blackout drunk.

It's typical bland suburbia. There's nothing separating it from a Birmingham or Memphis suburban area. Chain restaurants and strip malls.

I'm not saying the FQ smell doesn't exist, but rather why the Quarter smells. Goddamn disrespectful tourists treat a 300 year old city like it's a garbage dump.

Too lazy to use the bars bathrooms before they leave, so they piss on our walls. Do that in any other city and they'd be thrown in jail for the weekend.

If their drink from one bar is not allowed in the next bar, instead of guzzling it down or throwing it away in the trash can right by the bouncer, nah, they just throw it on the street for the rest of the tourists to slosh through. Ought to be a $500 litter fine.

Then there's all the vomiting cuz dickheads mix beer, cocktails, and liquor shots all night like goddamn nubiles.

I should know. As bell captain, I had to clean up all that shite in front of our establishment each morning.

you have absolutely no clue what you're talking about. You're basing all of your arguments off of things you heard second hand from what your idiot redneck buddies have told you. It's quite amusing.

A friend of mine was adamant about eating at Bubba Gumps when we went last August. On the way over a local heard us complaining about the long line to get in. She asked us where we were from and said "you drove 4 hours to eat at a frickin popeyes"?
