So the SEC keeps us from going to a certain bowl and now is doing the same on OOC scheduling?

Actually the SEC does the Bowl placements so I could see them saying no on them playing Baylor after playing OU.

It benefits Baylor and Big XII to play UT not other way around.

Yea, but scheduling UT is barely scheduling a power 5 team. Its barely a step above Duke, and calling that a power 5 win.
And to be fair, I think it was less your OOC schedule, and more your name that screwed y'all this year. In college athletics, your name is often times more important than your resume.

Came here to say this exact thing actually. Nixing the game hurts Baylor more than Tennessee. Would have been a fun game but the SEC is a brand with more at stake now than ever and a decision was made.

finalizing a home-and-home series

VOLS needed to fill a slot in Nashville. Not a home game. I don't really buy what the article says.

Message Posted by BeYou Well our curret SOS was developed when we were praying for just 6 wins. Once the CFP was announced our AD said we wouldn't change our scheduling philosophy until after we saw the end results of how the committee judged and the importance they put on OOC schedule. Since then we haven't scheduled anyone, except for Tennessee.

Hate to break it to you, but it wasn't the SOS.

It was your conference refusing to back you as their champ, and the lack of a CCG.

Big 12 is a mess.

There's no way we could embarrass the SEC like LSU in the 90s. Those 2, 3, and 4 win seasons were truly pathetic.

Well it would've turned the game into a feature game as well. UAB was scheduled to be our opener and for LP Field in Nashville (we scheduled a neutral site because our AD is protesting a weird tax the city of Knoxville imposes on us and because Nashville might as well be a home game).

So the schedule would've been:
UT vs Baylor @LP Field (Nashville) Sept. 5
UT vs OU @Neyland (Knoxville) Sep. 12

Not only would that put us playing back to back B12 teams to start the year but that matchup being in Nashville at LP would essentially make it one of the bigger kick off type games in all but name. In theory that could pose problems for the conference as it would pit the UT vs. Baylor at LP on the same day as the Chick-Fil-A Kickoff Game (Auburn vs. Louisville). It would certainly piss the Chick-Fil-A Kickoff organizers off as the SEC has a contract with them.

Is it common for the SEC to have a say in their schools OOC games?

It is now that the conference changed the rules.

Maybe I've missed something, but I'd like to see a link to any such rules by the SEC or any other policy giving them the authority to dictate who Tennessee can and cannot play in OOC games. Does the conference have a position? Probably. Does that mean Tennessee can't make its own decision? I doubt it. And besides...why the hell would Tennessee want to play Oklahoma and Baylor in the same year anyway?

While I can see the SEC stepping in with BU and OU in the same year my better guess would be it was TV stepping in but saying it was SEC. With realignment the TV issues now have more say than schools and conferences. Just like that Wisconsin vs Texas series getting canned when BTN (FOX) and LHN (ESPN) would both have been on line.

UT has a monopoly on scheduling top 5 teams for OOC games.

Can the SEC really control teams' OOC schedules like that?

I would have been pissed if they had blocked us from playing Oregon in 2011.

Yeah, sure thing. Those losses to Colorado St, Houston, and Southern Miss really made the SEC proud. Tennessee will never sink to only winning 2/3 games.

I seriously doubt the SEC dictate to any SEC team on who they can and can not play. I do think they are trying to figure out the 9 game SEC schedule and this may play a lot into what is fixing to happen. I think there are a number of SEC teams trying to get out of future games with OOC opponents for this very reason

OOC games are now scheduled with 'guidance' from the front office now. The rule was changed very recently (this year's meeting IIRC) and as a way of strengthening OOC schedules because certain teams weren't scheduling decent OOC opponents. That aspect wouldn't really apply to us as our SoS is in the top 5 consistently but depending on how the rule is worded - if they were worried with various agreements with other conferences, tie-in openers/sponsors, tv agreements etc. it's possible they'd override. Possible doesn't mean did but the conference gave itself the ability to have say in OOC opponents, particularly in terms of P5 opponents.
