I attended my first ever Hog game in the Bud earlier this year. Living 5 hours away, it was a treat. I was amazed at the lack of students at the game. I'm old and grew up on Sutton then Nolan, and remember the student section rocking. Exciting basketball is beginning to return, and we'd be 5 - 10 points better a game with a full student section. The tickets can't be that much, so I am really disappointed in their attendance. Solutions?

5-10 points better a game with more students?

That's funny.

Bring back The Hog Call and Jim Robken!

Cheerleaders and Pom Squad didn't even attempt to call the Hogs during the 1st half of the game Monday night..

Are the "Blue hairs" callin the shots at the Bud now?

Well all the fans that remember and were present during the glory days of the team are nearly blue haired by now so probably.

I think the comment that was 'win' is the true answer.

Side effect of attracting better students? More of them that don't care about sports...

Are you being serious? They call the Hogs like 15-20 times a game I'd say. Way too often. The Hog call should only be used in select situations. The tards that handle that end during football and basketball games never do it at the right time even though they overuse.

As the team has fallen off student attendance has dropped off as well, there just isn't the sense that BB games are must see events anymore. The Hogs will need to win and win steadily for awhile to get the rabid fans back for basketball.

I thought the student section was pretty poor when I was in school in the early 00's. Maybe it's worse now but even then it was nowhere near what it was like when BWA opened up or in the years following.

There was only one Hog call in the game the other day and it was the scripted one before the players run out.

Thanks Stone..
I had been drinking before the game, but was fairly positive that there were no more in the 1st half..

I'm a junior now, and I can tell you we're getting there. It used to be a lot worse, but it has gotten better this year.

It's weird - we were ranked and students seemed to be really excited about that. But we haven't played any team with a pulse at all at home, with the exception of Dayton (and maybe Iona). It's just hard to appeal to your average student against those types of opponent.

I hope that with SEC games coming up that will help out with attendance some, especially on our Saturday games.

I can say all of this because, outside of the games played during Christmas Break, I have only missed 3 home games in my 2+ years of attending the UofA.

Students today are different than students in your time. We used to get hammered and smuggle in as much alcohol as possible. Kids these days have different priorities.

Your question is akin to asking "why do Indians love cricket?" Well, because their culture is fundamentally different.

Same here. I graduated in '07 and thus caught the entirety of the Heath era. Attendence in general was terrible, and there were times when you wouldn't even know there was a basketball game in progress.

You even get into this with football. Your average student is only in it for themselves - not to support the student athletes. I would even venture to say more students than not don't even live and die with the Razorbacks like some of us do.

So, here's the difference. At football, you can get all dressed up, tailgate, take pretty pictures for social media, etc. For a basketball game? It's over quicker. There's no tailgating. No reason to get dressed up, really. At the end of the day, there's less for them to get out of it for themselves.

Sad, but true. We can probably thank the Non Resident Tuition Scholarship for this. (the out of state tuition waiver). You get a lot of students who have never watched an Arkansas game in their life before, not even on TV, coming to the UofA. They just don't live and die with the Hogs like students like me that have been watching games since before I can remember.

I think a lot of it is the new students don't know what it was like back in the day. Also, I think a lot of it is the fact that it's the Christmas holiday, so there aren't a lot of students around. Combine that with a group of students who don't know what Hog basketball was all about is a recipe for a poor student showing at Razorback basketball games.

One thing that continues to get me (and makes me feel old) is the fact that it's 2014. The average student is 19-20 years old. That means that they were born in 1994-1995 timeframe. That was when our national championship was. These kids were born during our glory years, and probably didn't really understand basketball til about the 2002-2004 era, when things were really bad. They probably grew up on Stan Heath and John Pelphrey. It'll take some success to get them back. Not saying that it's an excuse for piss poor student section performance, but I think it's the reason behind it.

We are winning and in the top 25. Are the students back? If they are then the student section should be packed come Saturday.
