If winning a bowl game is part of the criteria, you can cut Auburn's titles in half.

Agreed. Claiming '41 is an embarrassment and I don't know why we claimed it in the first place...nor why we haven't renounced it since...

Again, it's not 'claimed' as much as it's simply officially recognized by the University of Alabama - Tuscaloosa. Alabama has the trophy, and chooses to recognize it as a legitimate national championship award.

They also claim one from 1964 when they proceeded to lose their bowl to Texas. That's why most fans consider Arkansas the 1964 National Champion in football.

The old "AP and Coaches poll titles" count for everyone but Alabama argument.

I would add 1957 Auburn, won the AP, but did not go to the bowl

I was just adding the teams claiming ones in years where they lost their bowl game...

As for champs not going to bowl games...with Notre Dame, prior to '73, I think most, if not all, of their championship teams never played in a bowl either...and that was strictly by their choice...'64 and '73 would've looked a lot more legit for Bama if we'd just stayed home after the regular season. The '73 Sugar Bowl made me ill...that Bama team might've been considered one of the best of all time if they hadn't blown it against ND...

Bama began to claim the bogus non poll titles immediately after AU had the best claim in the country to the 83 title and had just beaten Bama again and bear was dead. Gumps got nervous and started making shite up as a result including the 41 claim.

I don't think Bama was all that nervous. I mean, a sub .500 Bama team beat Auburn in '84 even with The Bear being dead.

On a side note, wasn't Jay Jacobs pushing for Auburn to claim bogus titles just this past off-season?

Hmmmm, no actual reply. Oh and forgive me for hitting the "m" key by mistake in the subject.

People did give you valid answers among the smart arse answers.

Our SID upped the # of NCs we had, however, it is allowed. It doesn't matter whatever the # you want to credit Bama with...
IT'S STILL MORE THAN YOUR SCHOOL.

AU had the best claim in the country to the 83 title

I googled that and you had the 3rd best claim behind both Miami and Nebraska, all of whom are recognized by more organizations. Ah the irony...

Ah yes trying to claim one of Miami's NC very nice.

I was not aware that Auburn "claimed" a NC for 1983. Now 1941 on the other hand.............

Maybe the same reason Minnesota claims the 1960 National championship after losing the Rose Bowl 17-7

The 1960 season was the Golden Gophers' seventh under head coach Murray Warmath.[7] The Golden Gophers won eight games and lost two.[7] The Gophers won their sixth and most recent national title.[12] The team finished first in both the Associated Press (AP) and United Press International (UPI).[7][11][13] The voting was held prior to the Rose Bowl.[14]

Laugh at this dummy.

1925,1926,1930 and 1934.

combined record 39-0-1
27 shutouts
3 Rose Bowl wins and one tie.
Outscored the opponents 1133 to 107.

Four national titles that even a dummy cant argue against.

Such as?

And no, bama was not more deserving than ND in 1966. I'm guessing that will be the only one you can come up with.
