Our list of the most powerful coaches in college football uses a handful of financial metrics to define power. Those metrics range from the simple - salary and football budget - to the more complex areas of termination buyouts and coach's salary as a percentage of his school's coaching budget. We limited our scope to the head football coaches who made at least $2 million in 2014 (The average coach on our list made $4.5 million this year). We also overlooked any coaches who lost or left coaching positions this season, as well as those who are finishing their first years on the job.

1. Saban
2. Patterson
3. Stoops
4. Dabo (Dabo?!?)
5. Pinkel
6. Dantonio
7. Sumlin
8. Ferentz
9. Malzhan
10. Miles

Edit: Also, a Yahoo Sports article analyzing the list. Interesting stuff. LINK

Could not read past Dabo due to the fit of uncontrollable laughter it caused.

On the surface, yeah. But see the Yahoo link I edited to add. They discuss Dabo.

I think it just shows their criteria wasn't the best.

I would have gone by staff salaries, that seems to be a better indication of a coach's power.

Yeah, I agree, but it is Forbes. They're gonna love that golden parachute.

There are just so many ways to measure power. Can a coach get the attention of the PTB? Do assistants under a given coach get special consideration when applying for other positions? Are the coach's teams given more benefit of the doubt? How prestigious is a recruiting offer from said coach? What sort of media attention does he get? And so on. The financial metrics (including the one you suggest) are the easiest to actually measure. It's clear that Saban is the most powerful coach in the country based on the eye test, obviously, but it's less clear who comes after him, and in what order.

True true.

Still some metric of "coordinator cost as a percentage of budget" would be telling I bet.

Yeah. It's instructive, as Bielema's exit from Wisconsin demonstrates.

The Wincy situation is exactly why I don't trust head coaching pay.
