LINK....................

Here was a man...... a man
..Who was born in a small village
The son of a peasant woman.

He grew up in another small village
Until he reached the age of thirty
He worked as a carpenter

He never held political office.....
He never went to college
And he never set foot inside a big city

Yes, here was a man

While he was still a young man....
The tide of popular opinion turned against him..
Most of his friends ran away.
One of them denied him....
One of them betrayed him....
....And turned him over to his enemies
Then he went through the mockery of a trial....

And was nailed to a cross between two thieves....
And even while he was dying
...His executioners gambled
For the only piece of property
That he had in this world....
And that was his robe his purple robe

When he was dead
He was taken down from the cross
And laid in a borrowed grave......
Provided by compassionate friends.

More than nineteen centuries have come and gone.
And, today he's a centerpiece of the human race.

And...I think, I'm well within the mark when I say...

That all of the armies that ever marched
All of the navies that ever sailed the seas
All of the legislative bodies that ever sat
And all of the kings that ever reigned

All of them put together have not affected
The life of man on this earth
So powerfully as that one solitary life

Merry Christmas

Very nice. Good to get back to the true meaning of Christmas. We get so busy this time of year, we sometimes forget.

Assuming Paul didn't make up stories about a man he never met, I'd say Paul's life has made the bigger impact upon lives today.

At least acknowledge that without Paul, Jesus becomes a but footnote in history at best. Of course, without Jesus, Paul is Saul, and lost to history...

Paul never mentioned Jesus' resurrection or even Mary's existence once...not once..

(I don't want my new grandson to be touched with the bad karma that goes on later in this thread.)

Yes, it was. There were between 40,000 and 50,000 people living in Jerusalem during the time Jesus would have been there. It just doesn't fit Jefferson's narrative.

Yes, my kids loved this story when they were babies and before they had the ability to reason just a little. I did also, as do most people who are told this as a matter of unreturned fact....until we reach the age of 10 or so and realize that at least some of the shite our parents have told us is pure bullshite.

Not to get to deeply into the weeds but without a lot of meddling about in the religious lives of their subjects by the kings and parliamentary bodies mentioned doubt if Jesus would have had the impact on the lives of man that he has had. That impact was definitely up for grabs until the state got involved.

As far as Jesus goes if anyone had the PR department that he had and was fortunate enough not have the presence of a meddling press and a somewhat enlightened mass of people who had had enormous quantities of "\known" facts obliterated in their lives and in the lives of their forefathers he may have been exposed for the shyster he may well have been. When you tell a world of mostly ignorant people who think washing your body is unhealthy that a man is born to a virgin and your good enough at closing the deal to overcome their skepticism. Once you have them on the hook with that it is standard practice in the world of grifting to continue to work a mark. Ask any successful salesman and you will see that this is standard OP. When this group of shysters decided that they could convince these same people that this "man" came back to life after being killed they completed the greatest scam of all time.

These con men could have just as easily convinced these same people that Jesus had returned as a zombie and would get them if they didn't do what they said. This is a much tougher sale though because a con man understands that positive thoughts and images are much easier to sale than negative ones. If you don't believe it look at talk radio.......

And that's the problem with religion in general: if you have doubts, you are damned. To question is to sin. Nothing to see here....pay no attention to the man behind the green curtain. You Gata have faith a faith a faith....

Gata have it everywhere.

I've always liked that post OP. Here's one of my favorite quotes from a book I just finished.

quote:

I am trying here to prevent anyone saying the really foolish thing that people often say about Him: I’m ready to accept Jesus as a great moral teacher, but I don’t accept his claim to be God. That is the one thing we must not say. A man who was merely a man and said the sort of things Jesus said would not be a great moral teacher. He would either be a lunatic — on the level with the man who says he is a poached egg — or else he would be the Devil of Hell. You must make your choice. Either this man was, and is, the Son of God, or else a madman or something worse. You can shut him up for a fool, you can spit at him and kill him as a demon or you can fall at his feet and call him Lord and God, but let us not come with any patronizing nonsense about his being a great human teacher. He has not left that open to us. He did not intend to.

God gave us a brain and the ability to use logic and rational thought. Every preacher, pastor, or follower at SOME point in their life has used that thinking ability we were given to think about the nature of this stuff and possibly question it. Questioning is not going to "damn" you. However, after that doubting/questioning, if you aren't fully bought in and just say "eeehhhh, yeah I mean it sounds nice, but I'm not real sure I buy it" then yeah, that's going to be an issue. But the act itself of simply wondering or asking questions isn't some ultimate deal breaker. It's what you decide to do after that questioning that counts.

Yes, Jerusalem was a major city. But that doesn't jibe with Jefferson's irrational fear of cities, so I'm sure that's why he glossed over that. The city is the debil!

True. Although it does make Johnny Cash incorrect. I'm a huge fan of both Johnny and Jesus.
