Jefferson gone because we dragged our feet hiring a DC

Mack now visiting Texas (let's face it, he's gone)

Kyler tweeting Oregon stuff

Sheffield was always more keen on playing with the "fan 5" than A&M specifically

The ramifications of this cannot be overstated. Our class could literally fall apart now and that isn't hyperbole.

Meh. It is all on Sumlin.

If he wants to reprioritize coaching over recruiting halfway through, well it is his career on the line.

At a personal level I am little disappointed because a voice in the back of my head said as long as he kept recruiting well some other coach can come in and win win these kids down the road. But you never know, maybe the next guy purges half the roster. Either way, it now seems like at this point given the contract and how many open positions we have that Sumlin is going to ride out JFF's momentum all the way to the end.

Which is fine, its all on him.

If we get Foster in two weeks all will be well no matter the final class ranking.

I will say, this whole thing makes me REALLY happy we aren't playing Texas in that bowl game. They could have stolen back every little piece of momentum in the state by 2015 if that was the case.

I don't buy it, I think he was more on the fence than we were led to believe

We're a b-team program and always will be. We have the most loyal fan base who will buy tickets no matter what so there's no pressure on administration to have a decent product. We can go 7-5 and still average 105k at games. What's the point of having a good team?

I don't know if we are that far yet.

I mean, we were really in the running. If we had a DC we would have Malik, that simple. That is way better than in say 2008 when it would have been Texas vs OU with us maybe as a consideration for the McNeal recruit.

And I don't see anywhere in the program that rewards mediocrity. Yes we gave Sumlin big money for a class he is not going to sign, but he is not cleaning out the staff because he feels safe at his job.

What we really need as a program to step forward actually is still happening. The Big 12 missed one playoff, one more and they are a glorified Mountain West. Stoops is at the end of his OU career, one bad hire after him gives us a lot of breathing room. Michigan could still hire Les, etc.

Honestly our future looked better in three or four years (when the intensity of the SEC West coaching playing field dies down a bit) than in the immediate future. I wasn't expecting more than 8 wins next year no matter the DC just due to improvements in our competition. As long as we are setting ourselves up to be good by Kyler's senior year we are ok.

And honestly, as much as it suck, we don't play Texas anymore so this isn't like a Mack going to LSU. If not Charlie, one day some other coach was going to bring back that program. We need to find a way to solidify our base of recruiting, even if that is in freaking Arizona instead of Texas, before that happens.

This is our fanbase right here. "Hey guys at least he considered us" frick that. If you ain't first you're last.

This whole quote is you trying to convince yourself that it could be worse. Just stop.

That's exactly what it seems like to me. In a common theme here recently he seems to be looking for a reason not to go to A&M.

Normally I would agree with you, but the point wasn't a moral victory. It was more the fact that Sumlin is in the middle of this mess. We don't have some guy like a late Tubbs at Auburn that doesn't care. He knows all of this is his arse one way (Malik) or the other (correct DC hire).

Honestly it made me feel worse after I typed it so I failed. There isn't a lot of silver lining left. We need a splash DC hire.

I feel like I'm the only one who isn't melting over Mack. Either Snyder sucked at coaching up great talent, or we weren't recruiting good talent on Defense. If he sucked at coaching the talent, then we a decent DC we should be fine. If we didn't have the bodies for him to work with, then 1 linebacker isn't going to change a defense.

I'm honestly a lot happier now that I know Sumlin's not done cleaning house (with Andersen). It needed to happen, and we have enough star freshmen to absorb a weak class in the interm.

That is the real problem. Texas is all about early recruiting. All these firings put us behind bigtime for the 2016 class.

What it really means is that for the first time since 2012 the fate of our program isn't in our hands. Now, just like in the Big 12 days, we are going to have to root for others to fail to get another shot.

I agree with cokebottle. We had a bunch of recruiters on staff who were limited as coaches. Sumlin needs to get guys in here who can coach the players up once they are on campus. Sumlin erred in his judgement regarding coordinators. It's a hard lesson to learn. But shite happens...

Actually we still control our destiny and that isn't going to change unless Texas joins the SEC (which will never happen) or the SEC starts sucking (which also isn't happening).

We have the money and exposure and location. Just have to win.

That's all? Well damn, why didn't we just do that years ago?

We have always had the money and the location. We had the exposure until the Big 12 tv deal buried us with a lack of guaranteed TV time. Nothing is new except a higher level of competition.

What will have to happen is we will have to get lucky on a head coaching hire. Just like the last 100 years.

Are you serious? Are you talking about the same A&M that began as a small all-male military school?

We've never had MORE exposure than UTx. We do now, and that's going to continue. We're still going to benefit from being the only SEC school in Texas. Those are STRUCTURAL advantages that we've never had before, and they aren't going away.

Now, if Sumlin doesn't hire a good DC, and he doesn't start winning 10+ games w/o JFF, then that will open the door to UTx, but the fundamental dynamic has changed.
