Sent the wrong one I think....

I got a notification from CBS Sports saying the deal is done, FYI. No specifics.

Max Fried is one piece. Pretty solid pitching prospect he would be a solid #2 behind Tehran one day.

Jon Heyman @JonHeymanCBS
lhp max fried, ss jace peterson, 3b dustin peterson, of mallex smith going to braves for justin upon and low-level player

Max Fried just had TJ surgery......another seemingly odd trade but we didnt really give up that much to get Jupton in the first place. I like this one better than the Heyward deal.

Jace Peterson is a solid piece. He hit around 300 in triple A last year and was drafted #58th so he has potential. This is trade just points to the direction of the team. Cutting big salary's and adding young pitching.

It just kinda sucks because I remember how excited people were when we got the Uptons, myself included. All the "Upton Here, Upton Here" memes. It was basically a gigantic failure so i'm just like, meh, now.

I liked the addition of Justin Upton but we made a team of people that strikeout way too much. The entire lineup was full of all or nothing type players. Hart is doing the right thing but it's going to be ugly for a while. Got to rebuild the foundation.

Mallex Smith had 88 SB's last year

Hasn't played above A ball yet but has good wheels obviously. Also hit around 300. He was a 5th round pick so he is obviously talented.

It actually looks like the Braves got 4 very solid prospects. Dustin Pederson was a 2nd rounder but hasn't hit.

#3 Padres prospect - Max Fried
#7 Padres prospect - Jace Peterson
#10 Padres prospect - Dustin Peterson
#20 Padres prospect - Mallex Smith - supposedly led minors in SB?

Fried's Tommy John surgery makes me very concerned that the Braves didn't get enough for Upton. It's a giant risk hoping that he not only comes back healthy but that he actually lives up to expectations. Double whammy.

But yes, this is a better deal than Heyward for a bag of skittles they made earlier this offseason.

The only other option was really waiting for the trade deadline and hoping to get a top prospect as opposed to 4 solid prospects. I actually like this move here, we need to replenish the farm system, even though the safe, casual move is very "Atlanta sports" if you will.

I am with you 100%. Personally I'm not sold on this Fried dude at all. Obviously, the TJ situation is very worrisome, but what I find just as concerning is that his lone season in minor league ball was less than stellar.

ERA- 3.49
WHIP- 1.37
K/9- 7.6

Not terrible stats, but not great. I just think it is awful risky to trade for a player who is going through the TJ process and hasn't exactly lit the world on fire while he has been healthy. I am not opposed to trading proven talent for prospects, but I find it kind of hard to believe that we could not get a pitcher in return similar to the caliber of Andrew Heaney.

Sometimes teams in contention will panic near the deadline and make a desperate move.(See Braves and Texieria) I think I would have preferred that route. Justin is definitely a
rare commodity in MLB these days.

No, it doesn't. Braves are actively trying to trade Gattis and I'm sure he will be the next guy gone. Sucks, but I'd rather get some talent from him rather than stick him in left. I hope he lands in the AL and does well as a DH.

Yeah they are but they want a team to take BJ with him. Which no one wants to do. Also trading Kimbrel at the deadline would bring us a huge haul this year, I can't wait to see what we get for him.

No way the Braves would have gotten a healthy Fried. Talent is sometimes based on projectable tools. Fried has good upside and could end up being a middle of the rotation starter. Justin Upton was a 1 year rental. We got 4 solid prospects with Freid having front rotation type projections if he stays healthy for a guy who is out of contract after next season. This deal was a good one for the Braves. They weren't getting a superstar prospect for it but they did very well with the trade. The Jhey trade was pretty bad. This one was pretty good.

True, but I think when the deadline arrives and no one has taken the bait (who in their right mind who take up that contract? BJ is a roster killer) Gattis will still be traded with or without BJ.

Braves are completely rebuilding this team. I like the guys they are keeping, I'm anxious as well to see what we get when we deal Kimbrel. We could be building an allstar roster or we could be the next Astros. Hopefully it's the former. I have some faith in the new management, or at least more faith than I had in Wren if he tried this kinda thing.
