No such thing as a citation in Athens. You get caught, you get arrested and go to Athens CC Jail. Underage drinking penalties are so stupid

Kinda like that in Knoxville, the only way to get "cited" is getting an MIP (what Jalen got). Any other underage drinking violation (open container, public intox, etc.) gets you a trip straight to Knox County Jail. What sucks is most of the people getting underage kids in trouble these days used to be able to drink at the age of 18.

Jalen admitted to drinking that night when UTPD asked (that came out today) but he was also in a private space - his dorm room. Also, remember the party? Most of those players were merely cited for underage consumption by KCSO.

Citations for underage drinkers 18 and above happen all the freaking time on campus and in the city of Knoxville and Knox Co. UTPD (which is associated w/KPD) is the worst for that.

UTPD/KPD used to be better about this shite but they love busting students these days because they know mom and dad will pay up. And nowadays, KPD is anti-alcohol for everyone (they used to turn their heads a lot more on gamedays but they need the money). They're still pretty lenient on gamedays about open containers outside but not like they used to be in the 90s.

Sorry, but that's just not true.

Tennessee's drinking age was 21 from 1933 to 1964, at which it was lowered to 18. It was raised from 18 to 19 in 1979 and then raised to 21 in 1984.

There was a 15 year window from 1964 to 1979 when an 18 year old could legally drink and a 20 year window when 19 and 20 year olds could drink.

The youngest person that could drink legally at 18 in Tennessee is now 53 years old and the youngest that could legally drink at 19 is now 49.

Those guys are now in senior LE positions if not already retired from their LE careers. They aren't out making MiP busts.

Any street cop under 30 years old wasn't even born when it was legal for someone under 21 to legally drink alcohol.

They can't be out fighting actual crime, you know, the kind that goes down in East Knox daily, so the cops make up for it by fricking up everyone's good time.

Should be a non issue unless he shows some pattern of disregard for the rules.

No doubt. KPD and KCSO need to get their happy asses and patrol high crime areas. Be out and about in the general area and start to get to know the people who live there because if you earn trust then you'll get info. you won't get any other way. Residents would feel safer and criminals would get the idea that pulling shite out on the streets isn't acceptable.

Instead they looooove harassing students and ticketing the frick out of people as well as busting prostitutes. Real crime is too dangerous for these asshats to deal with and doesn't offer the easy case or $$$ tickets and vice 'crimes' do.

The people who wrote and voted to uphold the changed drinking age were all able to drink legally at age 18. But thanks for taking time out of your day to try and prove me wrong.

For real but only in name. Technically speaking, you're not allowed to have alcohol on campus but practically speaking it's not dry at all. Most of the time no one goes after it and Greek Row has keggers all the time without anyone bothering them. It's only when UTPD is getting froggy or someone calls police for a fight/noise disturbance etc. that it matters and even then only on occasion.

Our admin has even signed on to the current push by several college presidents to lower the drinking age to 18, if that gives you any indication of how it's treated. BUT with our super-conservative legislature changing the policy would not be worth it - better to do what we do which is basically to ignore that.

Also because the Strip is so close it's never been a big deal for those who don't want to chance alcohol in the dorms (but alcohol in dorms is incredibly common, FWIW and no one does much about it).

You meant the cops and you danged well know it, but since you decided to change the boogeyman, you apparently missed the part where Tennessee's drinking age was 21 until 1964.

Just a little math will tell you that the oldest 18 year old that could legally drink would have been only 33 when the age was raised to 19 and 38 when the age was raised to 21. Unless the majority of the Tennessee legislature in 1979 was made up of people under the age of 33 (which you know it wasn't) then again, those 'responsible' could not drink at 18 either.

You're welcome, but it really didn't take much time out of my day. When you're wrong by such a wide margin, proving it isn't very time consuming.
