Carroll lost 9 total games from 2002-2008 finishing in the top 4 each year.

Fair assessment, but one of his undefeated seasons is erased and he played inferior competition to Saban's Bama teams in the same stretch. I still think he is the only reasonable comparison to Saban.

They're like two very good salesmen. One has actually closed a bunch of ginormous deals and the other has put up some hellacious proposals with no buy order to show for it.

Yea, in the BCS era the only coach with a sustained period of success that compares to Saban in Carroll. It is interesting that Carroll's teams probably won more of their "big games" comparatively, but lost a lot more "WTF" games than Saban's do. I would think that comes back to coaching style and management style, but that would be a total guess.

"Big games"? Carroll won one (1) consensus NC at USC.
Saban's four is slightly better by like 300%
GTFO with comparisons until someone else wins more than two.

Talking straight accomplishments I think only a crazy person says Sabans is better

Show me how Jim did in his 13 seasons as a Coach at an Ncaa powerhouse team. I missed those years
Saban hasnt coached at powerhouse teams for 13 years either.

At mid tier coaching, Harbaugh beat Sabans "times"
You can't compare. Saban took over an MSU program that had been decimated by NCAA sanctions as well as had to deal with a powerful Penn State, Ohio State, and Michigan. But, even if you want to, Saban finished with a 34-24-1 record at Michigan State while Harbaugh finished with a 29-21 record at Stanford. Considering Saban struggled with sanctions in the first three or four years of his career at MSU, I'd say those records are fairly comparable.
you obviously don't follow west coast football because stanford was absolute dog shite before harbaugh got there.
harbaugh at stanford>>>>>saban @ Mich St

erased because his star rb's parents took money from an agent to help lure him AWAY from the school(to the nfl). that has zero impact of what actually happened on the field.
the most impressive thing about carroll was his teams performances in bowl games and out of conference games. they definitely lost a few head scratchers to oregon state, but pete carroll is the best big game football coach I've ever seen.

When Harbaugh took over Stanford, they were 1-11 the previous year. His last year that he coached there, they were 12-1 and beat the shite out of Virginia Tech in the Orange bowl. When you factor in the academic restrictions that he had to deal with, that's pretty damn impressive.
What do you think he would have done at Bama with all of their resources?

Harbaugh took over dupmster fire 49ers that haven't won anything worth a damn since the early 90's. He instantly took 49ers to three straight NFC Championship games and one Super Bowl.
Nick Saban was a colossal failure at the NFL and finished with under .500 record before he bailed back to college. Who is the better coach in your opinion?
Colossal seriously! wet noodle boy.

Same with Saban when he got to Michigan State. The two programs are very comparable, too.
Stanford All-Time Record: 605-440-49 (.575)
Michigan State All-Time Record: 668-439-44 (.599)
So let's not try to diminish Saban's accomplishments at MSU by saying they are next to nothing to what Harbaugh did at Stanford. Both programs have been mediocre for much of their history. But it's not like Harbaugh came in and won at Vanderbilt. Stanford does go through periods of success every now and then. Same goes for MSU.

Tim told the OSU players how they would cry like he did after Alabama stomped that arse in 2009 the SECCG 32-13. Oh How Tim Tebow cried. OSU players thanked him for the butt kicking awaiting them.
Coach Saban any day.

michigan state was a .500 program before saban got there, and remained so for most of his tenure there. he never won a bowl game there, and got blown out in all their bowl trips.
harbaugh took over a 1-11 team and finished his tenure 12-1 with a 30 point bcs bowl victory.

And Stanford was a sub-.500 team for half of Harbaugh's tenure there. What's your point?

Saban took over an 0-11 team racked with sanctions and finished his tenure with a 9-2 record. What's more? He never had a losing season there.

Are you guys serious? The NFL > college X1000. Why are you people comparing college records. Harbaugh turned Stanford into a national power where half, if not most, of Alabama's players couldn't walk on campus. Rockne, Bryant and Saban...........really? Belicheck, Harbaugh, Carroll and Payton and it's not a discussion. Coaching in the NFL is a meat grinder and the games best minds match wits EVERY weekend with grown arse men to coach. How in the f#ck are you guys talking Alabama vs San Francisco . Do it at the highest level or your not in the discussion, but you guys believes whatever bullshite you want to.
