Also, he visits the tanning booth regularly which shows that he's embarrassed of his midwestern milk toast pasty-face. That shows me humility.

I've done multiple threads on this board about this topic before. If you ask politely, I'll think about explaining this phenomenon, as well as it's roots and it's causes, to you.
I don't recall reading this before. I'm interested, if you have the time.

Geez Jeff, do you dislike anyone not from the rural south? If so, that's just sad.

Are you kidding?
I'm all in for this.

Don't you live out West somewhere?
I do now, yes, but not from out West.

I get that the Southern migration of yankees and midwestern milk toasts continues to accelerate, and that the cancer of atlanta continues to spread....... but multi-generational deep rooted native Georgians are alive and well, thanks.
And we're not going anywhere.
It doesn't have that much to do with migration, though that plays a part. A lot of it has to do with media exposure. TV, radio, movies - almost all the people on them ("reality" shows aside) speak with a very flat, Midwestern accent.
Similar thing is happening in the UK - their regional accents are disappearing, and largely for the same reason.

Interesting thread over in the OT Forum: Are southern accents becoming extinct or mellowing out?
Jeff, you'll be interested in this from Crimson Crusader, a Bama fan:
I told Crusader if he/she really wanted to accomplish that, he'd have to drop "Roll Damn Tide".

I've lived in the South all my life and I'm proud of it. But I've devoted significant time into getting rid of any accent I have. Accent is stereotypically associated with racism and stupidity. Both are misperceptions, but I don't want them associated with me regardless.

quote:That's dumb. Instead of spending a lot of time trying to change your accent, if you just act like a decent human being, people that you meet will realize that. If they choose not to like you because of your accent rather than what you're actually saying, that's their problem.
Accent is stereotypically associated with racism and stupidity.
Plus, thank god there's no racism in the north or anywhere else, otherwise I don't know what we'd do

Phyllis from Mulga would squeeze Crimson Crusader's ears off.
When I was single, I used to travel up North and out West for business a lot and I found women love a southern accent (and that's why their men hate it).

Yea Phyllis might have a thing or two to say about that.
It is interesting to see the differences when traveling though. I've gotten weird looks for saying ma'am and stuff like that, things that are just second nature. Even just nodding to acknowledge someone if yall are the only two people on the sidewalk and are walking in opposite directions past each other. Down here it's just being friendly but in other places it seems like they think something is wrong or that you want something.
