Sorry that I think Ray and Johnson will be a good combo.

His yards per reception average is only 25 yards.

He had one catch for less than 20 yards--- 18 against Texas A&M.

I see no reason not to hope he will be great. *edited for knee jerk reaction*

Let's not deal in extremes here

I don't think anyone is saying Ray will suck. I think they're just saying that it's yet to be seen if JJ and Ray will have a great connection.

Lol! Fair point! I just think sometimes it is easy get overly negative about a player who was behind Coates and Williams.

I guess it just struck me when he made the catches in the Arkansas game.

That game was probably why there was so much excitement.

Again, I am guardedly optimistic.

This. He's got the size, and he's made a few plays, but there's just a lot of people (like I said earlier, homers on the pay sites, not you higgs) who think I'm a moron for not thinking Ray has already proven he's gonna be an All-American and NFL draft pick. Some people just jump to optimistic extremes about players who haven't really done anything.

I think he'll be solid, but I'm not expecting a huge breakout personally

I think he has the potential to be mid level NFL draft pick with his physical ability if he shows some ball skills and be more refined as a football player.

Honestly, I hope we are in a position next year where our wide receivers just have to be solid even if they are not particularly exceptional.

I hope the running game will be excellent and the defense greatly improved.

LOL old men like me get grumpy after 10 PM.

This could very well end up being the case. I mean, look at Georgia with Aaron Murray. They had a great QB, a great RB and just solid non-spectacular WRs and their offenses were always really good. I could see ours being like that with JJ, Jovon and Roc

For me I think it comes from A-Day and some in 2013 where it seemed like Ray would suddenly get catches when JJ entered the game. Seeing the stats tho you are right they might not have the connection that it seems they have had from limited action.

With that said I think of our WRs left Ray has the most athletic ability. Him and Davis I think will make a solid combo. Similar to Adams/Zachary where those guys just made the consistent plays

Yeah I think Ray, Louis, and Davis will be a solid core group. I'm interested to see how Truitt develops. That kid has some serious wheels, easily one of the fastest guys on the team

I will say for a guy who was a solid blocker, seemed pretty solid in the receiving game and is a unique positive asset due to his physical ability, I have wondered why he never really saw the field.

Any word on how he did after the shoulder surgery?

It was memorable b/c it was a 49 yard TD pass. It was also the first TD in the game. Now, 1 pass from JJ to Ray isn't enough to say he's established rapport but perhaps it means he has a certain comfort level with him from practice if he's looking Ray's way for the first big TD bomb.

He has 7 receptions on the year - nothing worth writing home about but the guy has averaged no less than 15 yards per reception in each game he's had actually had one.

Sammie Coates had 6 receptions in 2012.
Darvin Adams had 3 receptions in 2008.
Emory Blake had 9 receptions in 2009.

Very few Auburn receievers in history have come in and in their first year or 2 playing been amongst the leading receivers on the team (some exceptions being Beasley and Courtney Taylor).

We had Coates and Williams this year, of course they were going to get a majority of the receptions. Next year 1 or 2 of the guys from this year or last will get a majority of the receptions. It will be okay, it's the way these things tend to work.

I for one would be thrilled to see two things from the passing game next year:
1. Spread the ball out, don't target 1 guy or 2 guys all the time, and make the defenses have to split their focus among all receivers on the field at any time.
2. A mid-range passing game. Seems like this season and last, passes were either screen passes, or 50 yard bombs, with very few in between. I mean, I know there were plenty of 15-20 yard throws, but at times, it seemed like we were playing xbox and selecting hail mary every play. I would love to see, on 2nd and 7, an 8 or 9 yard quick pass, attach the chains.

Wrong. Stevens does. He just needs more weight. He came in at 6'4 175 lbs...I wouldn't be running across the middle very eagerly either
