After the 2013 performance the defense put out I assumed that Collins would have these guys highly motivated for the Egg Bowl. If you come out flat in that game with playoff implications against your instate rival...that's no good.

Here is my take on Diaz.
Did he have a lot of talent at State? Yes he did.
But he also had hardly any talent at Texas. I believe he was there for one of the years that they had 0 players drafted. Texas was a total shite show while he was there. Not just the defense but the total program sucked.
He's done well everywhere he's been besides Texas. He did well at MTSU, State, and he's really improved LA Tech's defense from where they were last year.
I would welcome him back, but he also probably wouldn't be my first call.

The Walton run is one of the more embarrassing defensive plays I can remember from one of our defenses.

It reminds me of when Perkins gashed them at home in 2010 except frickin total opposite.

Other than Mullen's recess buddy in kindergarten, who do we get with our first call?
If y'all want to guess who we will get, go look at the GAs that coached with Mullen 15 years ago at Bowling Green. Y'all know how Mullen does.

Chuck Heater, current DC at Marshall. Coached with Mullen from 2006-2008.

Not only that, but Texas HS's do not coach defense effectively so the defensive talent out of Texas is not very good. Or I should say, over rated as a whole. Look at teams from Texas now. A&M, Baylor, Tech, UT. Of course, Texas schools(HS & college) are running 7-on-7 offenses, air raids, spreads, etc. You'd think at the HS level they would adapt their defenses or try thinking outside of the box in dealing with the high octane offenses but nothing so far. The emphasis doesn't seem to be there.
In Texas, there are some very innovative offenses. Defense, not so much.

I dunno Cdawg -- in terms of pure innovation, I'd put Gary Patterson and TCU against anyone in the country. He actually calls "hurry up" defenses now from the sidelines now kinda how the offenses do and is known to be very multiple.
There's a certain give and take in Texas. Is it that the defenses are worse or that the offenses are better? Time will tell on aTm...

I agree with you on Diaz. But I still don't think he was that great at MSU relative to the now NFL-proven talent level of that defense...
I did like the fact that he was so damn aggressive though, even if it crossed into ignorance on occasion. That's how/what I want to be on both sides of the ball...

Heck it works for OM, attack defense.

That's the thing -- Wommack has shown the ability to be multiple.
Year 1 - their dbs suck. Bring the house every play. Give up some huge ones(not unlike us this year), but give yourself a chance.
Year 2 - Much more read/react. DBs much better and DL very injured.
Year 3 - Both. Situationally. DBs elite enough to leave on an island when you need to load the box to stop the run -- and DL elite enough to get a pass rush without bringing anyone.
Let's face reality -- their defense is going to be elite for the foreseeable future. They bring back their whole DL and almost the whole 2-deep there. Have to come up with 2 new LBs without clear replacements. Replace Golson with Tee. Replace Prewitt with CJ Hampton. I don't see much dropoff there...

You're right and who I purposely left off the list b/c he's the only one I know of. He also saw his offense wasn't going to cut it int Big 12 and went and got a coordinator that could air it out. But I mainly meant that at the HS level b/c texas schools typically don't leave the state for recruits.

offenses are immensely better in Texas. That same emphasis(innovation) hasn't been brought to the other side.

Who needed Muschamp in huge way. This is only my opinion but until somebody from outside of TX coaches on that side and starts picking off LA talent, I just don't see A&M being elite on D.

Eh, lost both backup DT's. Losing Golson and Pruitt, Shackelford (probably spelled horribly wrong), Bryant if he jumps early. There is more lost there than you think.

Their defense will be great next year. 2016 they are definitely losing some blue chippers so it will be down a bit.

I agree that there's a leadership aspect that will have to be replaced. But the players filling those slots are more talented than the guys abandoning them for the most part...

So Mullen told Payne last week that Collins may not be back next year...

If that's the case, it shouldn't come as much of a surprise to any of the Al kids...
Almost sounds like Dan told him to look around...

And he wore the State towel after that. Mullen pulling out all the stops.
