Its almost our most talent on D ever. It should be performing well. The high turnover is due to our D consistently performing well, at this point its a safe assumption that recruiting and staff management are the causes and not the DC.

Stealing this from the main board.
Mboromaroon:

Well, I'm not so sure that's a bad thing for State. Gave up more big plays than any defense I can remember... even more than Ron Cooper.
Doesn't matter if redzone is tough if the other team can score at will from mid field.
Defense didn't make plays when they had to against Bama, and completely failed to show up against OM.

Here's OM's touchdowns in the Egg Bowl:
2 plays 47 yards TD
4 plays 84 yards TD
1 play 91 yards TD
2 plays 72 yards TD
---------------------
9 Plays 294 yards 4 TDs!!

That's a fireable offense in my book.

People are getting this all wrong.

Torbush
Diaz
Wilson
Collins

That's only 4 different names on that list...

When you hire the "Next Big Thing" you're always going to have turnover, because they want to keep moving up the ladder. Which is exactly why we need a proven commodity that we can pay premium for and expect to keep long term.

Not sure why everybody wants Manny Diaz back. The reason we had a good defense under his watch was because it was talented as frick that year. The best defense under Mullen's tenure. Manny will have a hard enough time working his way back up the career ladder, and I don't want him trying to do so at State. We need a proven guy with a bigger name, and better be prepared to throw down some serious jack for him.

I was referring the next hire being the 5th.

We also need to start paying our top assistants market value in the SEC if we want to hold on to them.
Also, Torchbrush and Wilson weren't really the next big thing.

Is Florida paying Collins a lot more?

Do they have to buy out his current contract? He had another year at 650 or whatever he was making.

Doesn't seem like Juicy Geoff left on great terms. Mullen sounds a little pissed in his interview.

You ever think Mullen has more reasons to stay than just money? His family loves the school and college, he gets paid well, and now he has proven we are capable of competing for the West/playoffs or a major bowl.

He has a top 15 recruiting class and a Heisman candidate returning next year. Lots of reasons to stay plus there is less pressure at MSU than michigan

Give me some names and rankings that are better than what we have now. That team was coached up just like this one was.

Now you are talking my language, but I just have serious doubts about Mullen or our athletic department doing the same.

Michigan really really screwed themselves over by running off Rich Rodriguez.

I'm all for Mullen holding coaches accountable and maybe even ripping their arse now and again. I don't think a press conference after a loss is the proper forum. I'm sure Geoff didn't appreciate that either. I'm not saying that's why he left but it didn't help.

So then it would be the 5th in 7+ years, depending on how long he stays. Not trying to split hairs here, but my comment was based off of you saying that it was the 5th in 6 years.

Absolutely. This next contract for Mullen should be a step in that direction though.

Torbush I agree wasn't, but Wilson most definitely was. He was the DL coach at Oklahoma before State. That is the definition of an up and comer.

How did our defense do the year before Manny? How did it do the year after Manny?

Granted, a lot of his MSU defense was a success because of Chris White and KJ Wright, but I think we have the pieces we need to make Manny successful again. It is hard for me to look at the Browns and not think of White and Wright.

We seemed to regress this year with more experience and talent, usually that's a sign of talent not buying in or not being held accountable. It wouldn't surprise me to see us improve next year with a younger, more hungry defense and a solid coordinator.

As for the scoring defense comment, we gave up:

29 to a horrid LSU offense
31 to Trill
23 to AU
31 to Kentucky
25 to Bama
31 to Ole Miss

Not exactly the '85 Bears there.

Yeah...honestly I was giving Collins a break with the 1a 1b stuff because I thought he was trying to keep the starters fresh for the Alabama and Ole Miss games.

Then we get arse rammed by an Ole Miss team that just got shut out by Arkansas.

Personally, I think the coaches failed the players. If you sub normally, this defense could have been nasty all year long. That would have been good for everyone on the defense. When the 1B's hit the field, everyone had an "Oh shite, here we go again" mentality. That put too much pressure on that 1B group.

I don't know how you have such a successful season just to have your biggest WTF moment at the very end.. He lost me.

Yep. I really have a hard time blaming our offense for too much in the Egg Bowl considering we were staring at double digit deficits for most of the 2nd half.
