That's a really, really weird choice for him to make.

Poor time for recruiting as well. I'm sure we'll lose a guy or two.

Promote Kul, or go get Barry Odom?

I don't know enough about Kul, but that would probably be my first choice if he is otherwise capable. It's been his successes that have brought about the DLine U reputation, not Steckel, and you can continue to trumpet that.

Honestly, Id rather get Odom and keep Kul coaching the DL only but don't know how he would react to getting passed over.

Just getting him some HC experience for when Pinkel leaves.

I don't know to be honest. I know Kul has done a helluva job with the line. Just kind of taken by surprise with this and can't sort it out.

My two cents is I don't understand coaches leaving legit Power 5 programs for head coaching positions at lower tier programs anymore. I think the old way of climbing the coaching ladder is evolving.

Bring on Barry Odom.

Local university here just hired the best local high school coach for their HC position. I don't think the ladder is really a thing anymore.

Then again, that's UNLV and SMS is SMS, so who knows.

I still stick with my original thought, getting him some HC experience under his belt.

Problem is he's 57. No P5 is going to hire him as a HC. If he wants to be a HC at some point, he probably has to go this route. I doubt he'll ever be a HC at a P5 because of his age so if he does do this, best of luck to him.

He's too old IMO. By the time GP retires, he'll be 60 or so.

I don't think this would be about getting experience under his belt, but getting experience on his belt.

He's too old to build something at MSU and then be hired by a power 5 school.

Memphis had the #5 scoring D, and the #22 total D this year. Of on has done a great job, and he has the DC experience. This is who I want.

As long as we keep Kul happy though.

He's doing it because it's probably been a life long dream and when nothing from better teams ever materialized it became now or never if he ever wanted to be a HC. Now he can say he accomplished what he always wanted to do.

I don't think it's about building a resume for later jobs. While I'm sure he will obviously want to win, I don't think it's about rebuilding a program. It's about doing what he always wanted to do before he's done coaching.

Rumors swirling that if Steckel leaves Odom will be brought in to replace him. I wouldn't mind that, Odom did a great job at Memphis. Just hope Kul stays and we don't lose any recruits over it.

Maybe a dumb question, but why not go after Pelini?

He's a hell of a coach, and could solve the succession issue.

I wouldn't mind seeing Pelini as DC either.

I hear ya. I just don't know if I like him as a person. Would be afraid that he would be divisive more than cohesive.
