Have thought it has been a bit strange that his name hasn't been thrown around at all this year for a potential HC job.

Who wants to follow after Saban, especially after he surpasses the Bear?

no.....he has had quiet interest. there is no succession plan at Bama and Saban does believe in career advancement of his assistants.

Kirby would not even sniff 5 million in that case

I doubt he's the HCIW. I think interest in Smart dropped off a lot because of Will Muschamp. I also think there are legitimate concerns about why he hasn't tried to cut his teeth outside of Saban's shadow yet.

Florida likely wanted to avoid hiring a Saban defensive coordinator. He doesn't make much sense for Michigan imo. I'm surprised Nebraska didn't take a look at him, but who knows what they are doing there right now.

I just don't see us going the coordinator route whenever Saban decides to retire, but I guess we will see. I'm starting to grow frustrated with Kirby at times. 3rd & Kirby is starting to become too much of a thing.

My feelings too. You may find a diamond in the rough, and you may find a total bust. But frequently you find a good head coach that had no way of knowing the pressure and skills required to go from coordinator to head coach at a major program.

I think Kirby's ship has past at bama and other schools, to be hired as a HC. I do not think the PTB as Bama, want to hire another Coordinator as their next HC. His defense against AU the last two years, will not help his cause.

Especially considering the job Pruitt's D did this year against y'all.

Especially considering the state of the program when Saban leaves will probably still be at a ridiculous level, so it just seems to risky to hand the keys over to a guy who has never been the head guy.

Kirby has a great job, he makes bank, he has tons of talent at his disposal, some of the best facilities in the country and more times than not he is coaching for championships. He will get his shot at a HC gig one of these days but it won't be as Saban's successor at Bama.

I do not think they hire Pruitt either.

Honestly, I think Smart's best chance at a relatively big SEC job would be to aggressively pursue some kind of HCIW deal at USCe. I think he's down the list at Bama, UGA, LSU, Aub, and other schools have younger HCs.

That said, he has a better read on the Bama situation than any of us do.

I think major programs see what happened to Mushchamp and will stay away from any Defensive mind HC Coach for a while. Not unit they consistantly figure out how to stop the HUNH.

I think Kirby is happy doing what he's doing and doesn't want to leave unless he's offered a "destination" job. He knows he can probably get a HC job at a smaller school any time he wants. He's got a good thing going.

Ship has sailed. I think teams have saw that he really doesnt have an answer to stopping fast paced offenses. Saban had to change his offense to be competitive. He even said during a presser that they would not be where they are had they not changed their offense.

Interesting, because if I'm an AD at a real "destination job", I want to see head coaching experience. Jim McElwain took the right path to get to a major head coaching gig.

I think all of us should be able to agree at this point that the "head coach in waiting" is a failed experiment. It's a bad idea. Even in the one case where it "worked" from a championship perspective (Fl State), it caused a shitstorm for a couple years that was unnecessary.
