Georgia has turned around the receiving side of special teams but problems remain with punting and kicking off.

Can we please sign a kicker who can drive the ball through end zones?

Can we please sign someone who at least has a clue how to punt? We can't get distance and coverage and we can't pin the ball deep. Field position kill the Dawgs in every loss this year.

Please hire a special teams coach. Almost every team does these things better.

Which of our current coaches would you fire?

How would the new special teams coach help the current situation?

Do those teams have designated special teams coaches?

Our kickoff coverage has actually been very good this year. That's why the squib kick was so puzzling. We definitely need to find a punter who can kick the ball deep, with some hang time. I feel like we improved a lot from last year to this year. One thing we did struggle with though was punt return personnel. There were numerous times this season our punt return team only had 10 people on the field, and a couple times where we had 12/13 people on the field. That sort of thing, especially after a timeout, is unacceptable and needs to be fixed before the bowl game and should not be an issue next year.

ETA: Oh yeah, Hicks too. That was pathetic. The one returner system works really well if they kick deep because blocking opens up better, but we need to have two returners if they are just going to pooch kick every time (which every coach should absolutely do).

Yeah, Morgan is no good. He was pretty solid with FGs last year, but outside of that has been very unreliable kicking, whether it be FGs or kickoff. Seems like that would be one of the easiest positions to fill.

And Hicks. So many blunders recently and twice in one game he bulldozed his own player to catch the ball. Surely somebody told him not to do it after the first time. Dunno how that happens twice in a game.

Why? Morgan can, and did it a lot. He's also very good with directional kicking and we did that very well this year. What is the longest return we allowed? I can't recall but I don't remember any big ones at all.

Are you sure about that?

He was fricking outstanding with FG's last year. He was somewhat shaky this year kicking at 72%. Definitely a drop off.

Morgan is going to be the FG and kickoff specialist next year. He's a very good kicker and I expect him to have a great year next year.

Thought kickoff coverage was good this year for the most part. Punting has been horrendous the past 2 years but that is more on the punter than it is anything the coaches can do. Wish we could get Drew Butler back.

Morgan is 76% FGs all time. That would rank about 50 best in the nation this year. That is not good. His kickoffs are even worse. We should be able to do better than that, especially at kicker of all positions.

Morgan's kickoffs rarely reach the goal line so coverage must be good. A better kicker puts the ball through the end zone so that there is no chance of a return. If Morgan was capable of a strong kickoff Richt would've never ordered a squib kick.

He was also 91% last year.

He's had a rough year but I expect him to bounce back since he's extremely talented.

I think we need a kicker for less than 30 yard kicks and then Morgan for greater than 50 yard kicks. They can flip a coin for who kicks the 30-50 yarders.

We finished the regular season at #65 in avg KO return ydg per game with 61yds a game. That # is skewed tho cause we kicked off 90 times, more than all but 8 teams in FBS...

We kicked off 90 times with 31 touchbacks (34.4%) which was good for # 69...

we were 97th last year 21 touchbacks in 88 KO's (23.9%)

Nick Saban would sacrifice 100 infants to have Marshall Morgan on his team.

Saban definitely would. I was wondering the other day why Bama never seems to have a good kicker. Sometimes their kicker is even one that's less than average. Just seems odd for someone as detail oriented as saban. We have definitely gotten spoiled with the kickers we've had at UGA.

Why in the world would we worry about special teams? Special teams are only 33% of the game which leaves 66%. We win about 75% of the time so the numbers are on our side. Hell 75% will get you a Belk Bowl Bid and accolades as a good guy.

Special teams were sound this year. Scored a number of times on ko and punt. Kicking and punt coverage was solid. Strong on xps and average on FGs. I do not think special team execution hurt us this year and it definitely helped us in some games. I'd give them a solid B.

Georgia averaged 61 yds on kickoffs. The leader was ucla at 64.3 yds. That 3.3 yards was important, though. ucla averaged a touchback 65% of KOs. Georgia average was 34%.
