1920 - 1 Bowl
1940 - 5 Bowls
1960 - 9 Bowls
1980 - 15 Bowls
2000 - 25 Bowls
2014 - 39 Bowls

As recently as the 1980's, making a bowl really meant something.

There's like 78 bowl slots now.

You play 12 games, 4 of them can be non-conference cream puffs, meaning you can go 2-6 in conference play and make a bowl.

Bowls are basically just game #13, not any sort of meaningful achievement.

Hell, even the old "10 win season" metric has become significantly watered down compared to the past (although it's still at least a decent measure).

So then why do teams even bother playing in them?

Means extra practice.

But yes, they do need to cut the bowls in half.

Yeah, after the past few years, our shitty bowl this year means something.

If Mizzou had made a bowl in 2012 and got those extrare practices for the younglings, we would have beaten Indiana and won the natty I'm 2013. Steak would have coached them up to stop Gus's weirdo offensw.

I'd take the extra practice and some more exposure to recruits.

Attendance at this year's minor bowls might kill them off for good.

Part of me misses the days when you'd wake up on NY day and have 4 awesome games to watch, with at least 2 having NC implications. Some exciting stuff in those days.

Evidently neither does starting a thread here.

LOTS of teams will be very happy to make bowls this and every season.

UT
UK
Hell, UF

and that's just the SEC.

It hasn't meant much ever since they started having bowl games for every six win team.

I think it is stupid when I see top-tier teams play in the AdamAndEve.Com Butt Plug Bowl at 6-6, but when teams that usually don't get to six wins make it and earn extra money for the department and allow fans to travel, why not? Everybody wins.

You can't judge success by making it to a bowl, that part has changed. But making it to a significant bowl is a different story. Making it to the Sugar, Orange, Cotton, Rose, etc. still means a lot.

It's all about inventory and TV revenue ...

But, to a lesser extent it's about extra practice time, recruiting advantages and making a fun game for the kids and the fans.

So while, as an old timer I seriously get the whole devalued diluted meaning of the bowls, I still believe they are basically a good thing. I just believe they should cut it back to maybe 24 bowls and leave it there. But that's never going to happen as long as TV pays money and sponsors are willing to sponsor. The lesser bowls are in no way about the fans.
